Role Summary:
The BI Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining business intelligence & analytical products that turn data into trusted, actionable insight.
The role exists to support decision makers with timely, accurate, and well presented information aligned to business priorities.
The BI Engineer will work with stakeholders to translate requirements into data models, dashboards, and metrics, delivering reliable BI products that support improved service experience and contractual performance.
Salary: £38,000 - £49,000 depending on experience
Key Responsibilities:
Translate Business Needs into BI Solutions
Turn stakeholder questions and requirements into clear, actionable data products (dashboards, models, metrics) that support decision‑making and improve service experience and contractual performance with guidance from Lead BI engineers or BI managers.
Design and Build High‑Quality BI Products
Develop analytical products aligned to established standards such as dashboards and reports to enable stakeholders to make informed decisions easily at pace and with confidence.
Model Data Correctly and Consistently
Create and maintain scalable data models that reflect business processes, enable correct analysis, and support reuse.
Communicate Insight Clearly
Present data through effective visualisation and storytelling so insights are easy to understand, clear and appropriate for the audience.
Ensure Data Quality and Trust
Validate logic, test outputs, and challenge anomalies to ensure BI products are accurate, consistent, and dependable.
Deliver Work Predictably
Own backlog items through the delivery lifecycle, manage time and dependencies, and meet agreed commitments within delivery frameworks.
Continuously Improve BI Products
Participates in workshops with stakeholders, monitors usage, and seeks feedback to contribute to iterative improvements of BI products.
Qualifications and/or Experience
Essential
- A degree level qualification (or equivalent practical experience) in Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
- Experience working in data or analytics within a complex organisation providing data solutions for multiple business units and workstreams.
- Proven experience delivering business intelligence solutions, ideally using Power BI.
- Strong analytical capability with experience in data visualisation and storytelling.
- Experience producing senior stakeholder insight and narrative reporting.
- Intermediate proficiency in analytics and visualisation tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau, advanced Excel).
- Practical experience designing dimensional data models and applying Kimball principles.
- SQL experience for data extraction, validation, and analysis.
- Experience validating and assuring the quality and accuracy of BI outputs.
- Ability to work with stakeholders to translate business needs into repeatable BI solutions.
- Ability to manage workload and deliver within an Agile‑oriented way of working.
Desirable
- Experience with Power BI Service administration and governance features.
- Experience with automation tools (e.g. Power Automate).
- Experience writing complex SQL queries and performance optimisation.
- Experience monitoring BI usage and iterating products based on feedback.
- Exposure to modern data platforms or cloud analytics ecosystems, Azure and Databricks preferable.
