Job Overview

We are looking for CBT Therapist/Counselling Psychologist/Clinical Psychologist/Psychological Therapist to join the CNWL Talking Therapies Harrow team. We have 2 fixed term posts available, 1 full time and 1 part-time (4 days).

The team hub is based at 12-14 Station Road, Harrow, HA1 2SL.

Main duties of the job

The post holders will be expected to provide psychological treatment for common mental health problems at step 3 level and carry out other duties such as triage and provision of clinical supervision to low intensity workers, trainees, assistants and other staff as required. We are looking for applicants who have enthusiasm for working in a primary care setting, who are adaptable, enjoy variety, and working independently as well as within a team context.

This post would be suitable for experienced practitioners, newly qualified CBT therapists and those nearing to complete the postgraduate CBT training (IAPT) in September 2026. It is a requirement that applicant has completed High Intensity CBT training or is close to completion and working towards BABCP accreditation.

The post holder will be expected to participate in extended hours clinics offered by the service which include early morning and late evening clinics. Ability to deliver therapy in local language is desirable.

Working for our organisation

We are a well-established service that is responsible for the provision of Low intensity and High Intensity therapies within the standards of stepped care model at steps 2 and 3. Alongside high and low intensity CBT interventions, the CNWL Talking Therapies Harrow service also has a counselling service at step 3. Individual and group-based treatments are provided at step 2 and step 3 levels.

The Service is currently offering a combination of face-to-face and remote working (delivered either via home working or from our office base). The team consistently meets its access and recovery targets and undertakes further projects and service innovation work to meet new demands and needs of the local population. There are clear and well-defined systems for triaging and screening of incoming referrals, allocation of clients to step 2 and step 3, management of waiting lists and stepping up and stepping down clients as appropriate. We also have good links and clear set pathways with local Perinatal, and Community Mental Health Teams.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The post holders will be expected to provide psychological assessment and treatment for common mental health problems at step 3 level and carry out other duties such as triage and provision of clinical supervision to low intensity workers, trainees, assistants and other staff as required.

The post holders will receive regular supervision and support from a Senior Clinician as well as benefit from peer support and guidance from other team members. The CNWL Talking Therapies Harrow Service has close links with Talking Therapies teams within CNWL and there are opportunities for further development. We have good links with and have trainees from all the Regional training courses and there would be opportunities to mentor and supervise Trainee Clinical or counselling Psychologists, High Intensity Trainees and others as appropriate. We offer excellent CPD programmes in CBT which involves live workshops and webinars from world leaders in their fields across the range of IAPT presentations. For more experienced clinicians, we are able to offer training in other models of care such as IPT, BCT, and MBCT. Our clinicians also have opportunities to develop expertise in their area of interest, such as, Long-term Health Conditions (Long-Covid, Diabetes, COPD, etc.) Perinatal, Older Adults, Learning Disabilities, Autism, LGBT, BME, Young People, etc. We also offer regular monthly session on staff well-being.

Overview Of Main Responsibilities

1.0 CLINICAL

1.1 Provide specialist psychotherapeutic assessment of patients referred to the Harrow IAPT Service for CBT, based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex psychological data from a variety of quantitative and qualitative sources including self - report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi structured interviews with patients and others involved with their care. Ensure the outcome of assessment is communicated to the referring agent and other professionals involved.

Determine suitability of the approach and refer on unsuitable individuals to appropriate agencies and/or provide advice, including psycho-education, as appropriate.

1.2 Formulate and implement plans for the specialist psychotherapeutic treatment and/or management of patient’s mental health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of those problems derived from a broad theoretical knowledge of cognitive behaviour therapy, and employing methods based upon evidence of proven efficacy within

modality. It is expected that the postholder will treat patients across the range of severity.

1.3 Be responsible for implementing a range of specialist cognitive behavioural therapy interventions for individual patients and groups, adjusting and refining psychotherapeutic formulations as practice and experience demand, and drawing upon different explanatory models and objective cognitive behaviour therapy measures to maintain a

number of provisional hypothesis. Whilst maintaining ethical and legal standards.

1.4 Comply with caseload and set activity requirements for an HI post as per IAPT national guidelines and Local IAPT implementation board.

1.5 Regular and prompt entry of clinical data relating to patients on caseload and make it available for supervision and for the patient as required.

1.6 Regularly monitor and evaluate therapy programmes and progress, using objective measures where appropriate, and communicate this to referring agent and other professionals involved as appropriate.

1.7 Evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical, developmental and cultural processes and systems, which have shaped the individual.

1.8 Include family members and others involved in clients’ problems in therapy programmes, where necessary.

1.9 Assess and deliver therapy programmes in the community or GP Surgery and other settings within the Harrow IAPT Service, as necessary.

1.10 Discharging patients as appropriate and arrange follow-up as appropriate on completion of therapy. Ensure outcome and follow-up of treatment is communicated to the referring agent and other professional involved as appropriate.

1.11 Exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment, discharge and onward referral of patients whose problems are managed by psychotherapeutic interventions.

1.12 Assess and manage clinical risk to self and others. Involve other agencies as appropriate.

1.13 Adhere BABCP, HPC BPS and other relevant professional codes of conduct, policy and guidance.

1.14 Maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data-entry and recording, report writing for the purposes of personally generated clinical, audit, teaching and research information.

1.15 Exercise responsibility for professional self-governance in accordance with the HPC, BPS and BABCP and other relevant professional codes of practice and conduct and Trust policies and procedures.

1.16 Develop and maintain knowledge of local resources and relationships with relevant statutory, voluntary and community groups and organisations.

1.17 Develop and propose innovative responses to identified needs of the diverse and multicultural community the service serves in collaboration and consultation with colleagues from Harrow IAPT service and other relevant teams and agencies.

Person specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Substantial specialist knowledge, theory and skills of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy acquired through diploma / degrees with BABCP accreditation.
  • Critical understanding of the relevance of studies of human development, psychopathology, psychology, social issues and evidence based practice.
  • Must be fully or provisionally accredited with the BABCP or have completed a BABCP accredited high intensity CBT course or diploma programme.

Desirable criteria

  • Qualified/Registered Mental Health Professional

Previous Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of specialist cognitive- behavioural psychotherapeutic assessment and treatment of adult patients in a mental health setting and presenting with problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.
  • Experience of working in an IAPT service or other primary care setting
  • Specialist experience acquired through having experience of supervised assessment and therapy during training.
  • Experience of teaching, training and supervision.

Desirable criteria

  • Previous specialist psychotherapeutic working experience.
  • Experience of the application of psychotherapy in difference cultural contexts.
  • Experience of working within a primary care/community setting
  • Research skills and knowledge and aptitude.

Essential criteria

  • Skills in using the methods of cognitive behavioural therapy assessment, intervention and management including the use of theoretical models to analyse information and to develop formulations upon which to base treatment.
  • Well-developed skills in the effective communication of highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to a wide variety of recipients in a range of settings including the ability to produce comprehensive and coherent letters, reports and associated documentation.
  • Knowledge of the psychotherapeutic role
  • Highly developed communication skills at overcoming barriers to understanding and acceptance.

  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychotherapy in specific difficult- to-treat groups (e.g. complex needs, personality disorder, somatoform disorders, persons with additional disabilities etc).

  • Knowledge of the academic literature of the speciality.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the speciality and mental health generally.
  • Ability to provide a culturally-competent and non-stigmatising service
