Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Ophthalmology Department at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in cataract surgery. This post offers the chance to work within an innovative and forward-thinking service model, delivering high-quality care within the dedicated Cataracts Unit at Nevill Hall Hospital, Abergavenny.

This role is ideally suited to a motivated and self-directed clinician who thrives in an autonomous working environment. The successful applicant will play a central role in shaping and delivering a high-flow cataract service, working with a significant degree of independence while contributing to a collaborative multidisciplinary team. There will be considerable opportunity to influence clinical pathways, service innovation, and the future development of regional ophthalmology services across South East Wales.

The Regional Ophthalmology Programme is an ambitious service transformation initiative spanning Aneurin Bevan, Cardiff and Vale, and Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Boards. The programme aims to deliver sustainable, high-quality ophthalmology services and improved patient outcomes through regional collaboration and innovative models of care.

The Health Board has a growing Research & Development infrastructure and strong academic links with Cardiff University School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, including internationally recognised vision research teams.

Main duties of the job

  • The successful candidate would undertake cataract surgery and have experience of delivery of high flow lists.
  • To clinically support and train a multidisciplinary team including trainees, associate specialists, optometrists, and nurse practitioners.
  • Provide leadership and innovation in the cataract ophthalmology service delivery.
