Electrical Supervisor
Role – Substation Electrical Supervisor
Location – Exeter
Mint Selection are partnered with a leading organisation within the energy sector to recruit an experienced Substation Electrical Supervisor for a major project based in Exeter.
The position will be focused specifically on the 400kV substation package, taking responsibility for supervising electrical installation activities across the high-voltage substation through construction, installation, testing and commissioning.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced transmission substation professional to join a major UK energy infrastructure project on a long-term contract.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate electrical installation activities across the 400kV substation package, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with the project programme.
- Oversee the installation of HV switchgear, transformers, Protection & Control panels, LV systems, control cabling, power cabling, containment, earthing and associated substation electrical infrastructure.
- Supervise electrical subcontractors and installation teams, providing technical support and resolving site-based installation issues.
- Ensure all electrical installations are completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, manufacturer requirements and relevant transmission standards.
- Oversee the installation, termination and inspection of Protection & Control panels and associated LV control cabling.
- Take ownership of electrical QA/QC activities including inspections, ITP compliance, quality walk-downs, punch listing, red-line mark-ups, snagging and management of non-conformances through to close-out.
- Review installation documentation, inspection records, test packs, cable schedules, drawings and associated quality documentation.
- Monitor workmanship and construction progress, identifying risks, delays, design clashes or quality concerns and implementing corrective actions where required.
- Coordinate with mechanical, civil and commissioning teams to manage interfaces and ensure the substation is delivered in line with the overall construction and energisation programme.
- Conduct toolbox talks, daily briefings and safety inspections while promoting a strong health, safety, environmental and quality culture across site.
- Ensure all activities are undertaken in accordance with RAMS, permit-to-work systems, project HSEQ procedures and applicable National Grid requirements.
- Maintain accurate site records, progress reports, inspection documentation and quality records throughout construction.
- Support the Construction/Site Manager with short-term planning, programme updates, contractor coordination meetings and progress reporting.
- Assist with testing, commissioning and energisation activities, ensuring installations are inspected, completed and handed over to the required standard.
Experience Required
- Proven experience as an Electrical Supervisor, Substation Supervisor or Electrical Site Supervisor on high-voltage substation projects.
- Minimum 5 years' relevant substation experience, with 10+ years highly desirable.
- Strong experience working on transmission-level substations, ideally at 400kV.
- Previous experience working on National Grid (NGET) and/or SPEN sites is highly desirable.
- Strong hands-on background installing HV switchgear, Protection & Control panels and associated LV cabling.
- Experience with GIS and/or AIS substation equipment.
- Previous experience working with GE / GE Vernova equipment would be highly advantageous.
- Strong understanding of substation cabling, containment, earthing, terminations and electrical installation practices.
- Good QA/QC knowledge including ITPs, inspections, NCR management, test documentation, snagging and handover.
- Strong understanding of RAMS, permit-to-work systems and safe systems of work within high-voltage environments.
- NGET Competent Person / NSI 6 & NSI 8 certification is desirable but not essential.
- Excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills with the ability to manage subcontractors and installation teams effectively.
