The Facilities Engineer is responsible for ensuring the reliable and safe operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of building systems and infrastructure, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and general facilities equipment. The role supports regulated laboratory environments, including critical infrastructure and compliance with EHS and industry standards.
This position reports to the Facilities Manager and is part of the Workplace Team within the Workplace Department located in Cambridge, UK. This is a full-time on-site position, supporting critical lab, office, and operational environments. May require occasional out-of-hours or con-call support and/or flexing shift start/end times.

In This Role, You Will Have The Opportunity To
- Ensure reliable operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems across assigned properties.
- Execute preventative and corrective maintenance, inspections, and general repairs on equipment and building systems to minimize downtime and ensure safe, compliant operations.
- Perform inspections, maintain systems/system records and tracks work orders against KPIs/SLAs. Ensure compliance with all EHS, regulatory, and site-specific standards.
- High school diploma/equivalent or relevant technical qualification and 8-10+ years of experience in a facilities/lab setting
- Foundational skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Ability to learn, understand, and uphold Building Code, Regulations, Environmental Health & Safety policies
- Minimum NVQ Level 3, Approved, or Certified Electrical Technician Preferred
- Ability to lift 5-10kg routinely throughout the work day as needed
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 30kg as needed
- Ability to stand for long periods of time as facilities/laboratory work requires
- Construction project management experience
- Supporting BSL-2 lab environments (pressure control, pressurization, and contamination prevention) in biotech/research settings as well as ISO 14001
- Maintaining critical lab systems (ULTRA‑low freezers, DI water, CO₂, backup power) in high-throughput labs
