Finance Manager - Operations

Reading, England, United Kingdom Full-time Posted 8 hours ago

At OQC, we aren't just theorising about the future; we're building it. Born from a philosophy of bold innovation, we've successfully transitioned quantum computing from an academic dream into a commercial reality. The most exciting thing is that we're just getting started and we've recently closed our £260 million Series C funding round - the largest fundraise ever completed by a quantum computing company in Europe.

The Purpose

As Finance Manager - Operations, you'll lead and continuously improve the day-to-day financial operations that keep OQC running with accuracy, control and pace. You'll combine hands-on delivery with process improvement, governance and people leadership, helping build a scalable, audit-ready finance function that can support our continued international growth.

The Role

You'll take ownership of core operational finance activities spanning month-end close, treasury, payroll, VAT, financial controls and audit readiness.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys getting into the detail while also looking for better ways to work. You'll strengthen controls, improve processes and systems, support our growing international footprint, and provide guidance to others within the finance team.

What You'll Be Working On

  • Own key elements of the month-end close across multiple entities and jurisdictions, including journals, accruals, prepayments, balance sheet reconciliations and close-checklist governance.
  • Lead core operational finance activity across treasury, cashflow monitoring, bank reconciliations, payroll accounting, employee expenses, credit cards and supplier payment runs.
  • Prepare VAT and equivalent local tax returns, support statutory finance requirements and maintain accurate, complete records ready for review and submission.
  • Build and maintain a strong financial control environment, with clear segregation of duties, documented procedures, independent review and robust audit trails.
  • Support OQC's international expansion by helping establish scalable finance processes, local compliance arrangements and payroll operations for new countries and entities.
  • Partner with the Group Financial Controller, FP&A, People and wider business teams, providing analysis, resolving finance queries and ensuring processes support organisational priorities.
  • Continuously improve finance systems, processes and controls, developing scalable procedures and playbooks while mentoring and guiding the Finance Associate - Accounts Payable Lead.

What We're Looking For

  • ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified, or an equivalent professional accounting qualification.
  • Strong financial accounting and operational finance knowledge, with significant hands-on experience of month-end close and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Experience managing VAT, payroll finance and statutory compliance activities.
  • A strong understanding of financial controls, governance and audit-ready financial processes.
  • Experience improving finance processes and internal controls within a changing environment.
  • Strong Excel skills and practical experience working with ERP finance systems.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, with the confidence to take ownership, exercise sound judgement and build trusted relationships across the business.
  • A proactive, continuous-improvement mindset and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and solve problems in a fast-paced environment.

The 'Nice-to-Haves'

  • Experience working in a multi-entity, international or high-growth organisation.
  • Experience with NetSuite or another cloud-based ERP platform.
  • Knowledge of UK VAT, payroll and employment taxes, including P11Ds and PSA.
  • Experience supporting international entities, overseas payrolls or multi-currency environments.
  • Experience contributing to finance-system implementations, process transformation or automation initiatives.
  • Practical knowledge of treasury and cash management.
  • Experience supporting external audits and statutory reporting.
  • A builder mentality, curiosity about technology and automation, and the confidence to challenge existing ways of working constructively.
