We are supporting a public sector client in hiring a Frontend Developer to join a small, focused engineering team maintaining and improving a live service within a legacy deployment environment.
This is a hands-on development and service management role requiring someone comfortable taking ownership of a legacy service, contributing to incident resolution, release management and continuous service improvement alongside active development work. The successful candidate will become a subject matter expert for the service, working within Agile sprint cycles and collaborating closely with a Programme Manager and Delivery Manager to demonstrate, accept and ship changes.
This role suits an experienced Frontend Developer comfortable working within legacy environments, confident discussing and reviewing code under scrutiny, and able to balance service support responsibilities alongside ongoing development activity.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the existing frontend service, taking ownership of the codebase and becoming the subject matter expert for the domain
- Manage and resolve tickets across incident, change, service request and problem processes in line with DDaT operating models
- Build and manage deployment packages for release into production, ensuring controlled and well-documented release management
- Write and pass feature and external API tests as required, maintaining and updating API documentation where necessary
- Conduct peer reviews for each change and commit code to the master branch following review and approval
- Identify and implement continuous service improvement opportunities across service management processes and technology
- Demonstrate completed changes to the Programme Manager or Delivery Manager during sprint reviews and show and tell sessions
- Interface with other support services, raising and responding to requests and contributing to shared technical investigations
Essential Skills
- Strong React and TypeScript proficiency with proven front end development experience in production environments
- Familiarity with the GDS Design Kit and experience delivering to GDS service standards
- Node.js experience for server-side and tooling development
- Experience with Docker for containerised development and deployment workflows
- Experience with Storybook for component development and documentation
- Comfortable working with and taking ownership of legacy services and legacy deployment models
- Experience writing feature and API tests as part of an Agile sprint delivery cycle
- Strong communication skills with the ability to discuss, review and explain code clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Desirable Skills
- Familiarity with service management processes including incident, change and problem management within DDaT frameworks
- CI/CD pipeline experience and version control using Git
- Experience working within public sector or regulated delivery environments
