Head of Communications
OUR CLIENT:
The Architects Registration Board (ARB) is an independent professional regulator, established by Parliament as a statutory body, through the Architects Act, in 1997. They are accountable to government. The ARB want a world in which the built environment inspires those who live and work in it, reflects the needs of society so that people are safe and can live well, and helps to tackle the fundamental challenges our planet faces.
The contribution that regulation can make to this overarching purpose may be small, but we recognise that architects and other professionals in the built environment can achieve their own goals, potential and outcomes only if we are delivering effective regulation.
THE ROLE:
ARB is seeking a Head of Communications to be responsible for leading ARB’s communications strategy to promote confidence, transparency and trust in it as a regulator. The role ensures clear, consistent and timely communication with stakeholders, the media and the public, supporting delivery of ARB’s corporate strategy and organisational objectives.
The postholder will provide expert advice to the Senior Leadership team and the ARB Board managing reputational risk and leading on communications at time of challenge.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
As Head of Communications, you will be responsible for:
- Leading, developing and delivering an integrated communications strategy aligned to ARB's corporate strategy, business plan and ARB's statutory responsibilities.
- Ensure communications support public understanding of ARB’s role, decisions and impact.
- Act as the ARB’s senior media lead, managing relationships with national, regional and trade media.
- Provide leadership to all internal and external communications channels, including websites, digital platforms, publications and campaigns.
- Lead digital communications strategy, ensuring effective use of online channels and data‑driven insights.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Significant senior communications experience with a regulator, central government, professional membership organisation or similarly complex environment
- Proven track record of leading communications in a complex, high‑profile or regulated environment.
- Strong media handling experience, including managing sensitive or contentious issues.
- Demonstrable experience of using social and digital media to communicate with key audiences.
- Experience of advising senior leaders on strategic communications, media handling and reputational risk.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary of £60,000 - £65,000.
Benefits include a pension scheme with an employer contribution from 8% to 14%, depending on your own contribution, holiday entitlement of 27 days, health insurance, flexible working and more.
