HV Design Integration Lead

Ringwood OR Birmingham OR Widnes (Hybrid after probation)

£80,000 – £110,000

PLEASE NOTE: This role is able to offer sponsorship

VIQU are partnering with a growing utilities organisation who are seeking an experienced HV Design Integration Lead to take ownership of technical delivery across substation design projects. This is a hands-on role for a senior or lead-level engineer who is still actively involved in producing and reviewing designs, rather than operating purely in a management or consultancy capacity. You will act as the key technical interface between the business and external design partners, ensuring quality, compliance, and effective coordination across HV projects. Longer term, this role offers the opportunity to help shape and build an internal HV design function, with scope to move into leadership as the team grows.

Key Responsibilities of the HV Design Integration Lead:

  • Lead and undertake HV electrical design activities, with a focus on primary design for substations and associated infrastructure
  • Produce, review, and coordinate designs, calculations, layouts, schematics, and technical documentation
  • Ensure all designs are compliant with industry standards, safe, buildable, and aligned to project requirements
  • Act as the technical interface between internal teams, external design consultants, contractors, and suppliers
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs across primary, protection & control, earthing, cabling, and system studies
  • Manage design interfaces and ensure clear ownership, accountability, and quality across all deliverables
  • Support project mobilisation, ensuring technical scope, deliverables, and expectations are clearly defined
  • Provide technical assurance through checking, review, and sign-off activities in line with relevant standards and frameworks
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks while supporting efficient and practical project delivery
  • Contribute to bids, tenders, and early-stage project discussions with technical input and delivery strategy
  • Support the development of internal design standards, processes, and quality assurance frameworks
  • Play a key role in building and developing the in-house HV engineering capability over time

Key Experience Required of the HV Design Integration Lead:

  • Strong experience in HV substation design, with capability to produce and review primary design work
  • Proven background working within DNO, IDNO, ICP, or utility contractor environments
  • Experience delivering projects at 33kV minimum, with exposure to 132kV highly desirable
  • Demonstrable experience coordinating across multiple electrical disciplines and managing design interfaces
  • Strong understanding of utility standards, compliance requirements, and regulated environments
  • Experience working with external design consultants and managing third-party design inputs
  • Ability to operate as a hands-on technical lead within a delivery-focused environment
  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Chartered status (or working towards / equivalent experience) is desirable
  • Strong technical judgement with a focus on safety, quality, and buildability
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work across business, client, and supplier environments
  • A pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset with the ability to solve complex engineering challenges
