The salary scale for a Band 3 has been adjusted as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2026/2027 and will be implemented in August 2026 backdated to 01 April 2026 where applicable.

Job Overview

This post is designed to give the post holder an experience of working within Ophthalmology as a speciality. It will allow them to build on a desire to work in the speciality. They will be expected to take part in outpatient clinical activities and develop more minor interventional techniques such as minor ops and other treatments.

The role will also have an active research component with one session a week committed to working as part of projects currently being undertaken in the department.

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Ophthalmology department of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

Delivery of eyecare across Wales is undergoing significant and exciting transformational change. This opportunity will allow the successful applicant to be at the forefront to the delivery of a unique eyecare service. The ophthalmology network within Wales is working closely together with primary care to provide a joined up integrated eyecare pathway. Any successful applicant would be expected to be able to engage in multi-disciplinary working to allow the highest quality care to be delivered.

Aneurin Bevan UHB is the largest HB in South Wales and serves a diverse population of approximately 670,000 across 4 main sites. The Ophthalmology department has a consultant body that provides a comprehensive secondary care service. As part of transformational reform within NHS Wales Ophthalmology, any successful applicant should expect to be affiliated to a South East Wales regional centre of excellence in the near future (serving population of 1.5 million) as the as Executive teams across the three main health Boards are committed to the development of a regional service.

ABUHB has an expanding R&D department and there are close links with Cardiff University School of Vision Science where there are a number of internationally renowned vision research teams.
