Legal Director - Private Wealth & Tax

Job Summary

We are seeking a Senior Managing Associate or Legal Director to act as a right-hand practitioner to Patrick Harney, Partner in Mishcon de Reya's Tax and Wealth Planning team, supporting the day-to-day management and growth of his practice. Patrick's practice focuses on cross-border tax advice and planning, with a particular focus on US-UK tax, trust and estate planning and tax planning under the new foreign income & gains regime, acting for high-profile individuals, families, family offices and hedge funds spanning the UK, Ireland, the US and Latin America.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Work closely with Patrick across a broad caseload of UK personal tax, trust and estate planning matters, providing high-quality technical support and independent judgement.
  • Advise on UK tax planning for formerly non-domiciled and internationally mobile clients, including the taxation of private placement life insurance, offshore trusts and companies and legacy remittance basis positions.
  • Support cross-border estate planning for UHNW individuals, families and family offices, coordinating with advisers in other jurisdictions as needed.
  • Help manage the smooth day-to-day running of the practice, including workflow, resourcing, billing oversight and client service standards.
  • Support business development activity, including client relationship management, proposals, thought leadership and profile-building initiatives.
  • Supervise and mentor junior lawyers working on shared matters, contributing to their technical development.
  • Following promotion to Legal Director, take on personal supervision of an allocated portfolio of matters, under Patrick's continued overall oversight.

Skills/Experience

  • Qualified solicitor in England and Wales, with a minimum of six years' post-qualification experience in UK personal tax.
  • High degree of technical knowledge of personal tax law, including the historic remittance basis of taxation, the UK tax treatment of offshore trusts and companies and cross-border estate planning. Technical expertise will be tested at interview.
  • Cross-border tax and trust experience involving the United States is an advantage but not a prerequisite.
  • A strong analytical mind and excellent problem-solving skills, with the judgement to handle complex, high-value private client matters.
  • A collaborative, trusted-adviser mindset, comfortable working closely and flexibly alongside a senior partner in a right-hand capacity.
  • No existing portfolio or book of business is required for this role.

Reporting line and progression

This role will report directly to Patrick Harney. On promotion to Legal Director, the successful candidate will be assigned their own matters to run and supervise, while continuing to report to and work under Patrick's overall oversight.
