Management Accountant (12 month FTC)

London Area, United Kingdom Contract Posted 4 days ago

About the Role

We are seeking a qualified accountant to join a growing finance team on a 12-month fixed-term contract, with the potential for extension.

Reporting to the Financial Controller, the role combines hands-on management accounting and month-end responsibilities with technical accounting, financial reporting and process improvement.

You will take ownership of a significant part of the month-end close and balance sheet reconciliation process, while also supporting the Financial Controller with more complex accounting areas and ensuring that key processes are well documented, robust and audit-ready.

This is a hands-on position within a small finance team, so the successful candidate will be comfortable preparing as well as reviewing work. There will also be a strong focus on improving processes and documentation, leaving the finance function in a stronger position at the end of the assignment.

Key Responsibilities

Month-End & Management Accounting

  • Own a significant portion of the management accounting month-end close.
  • Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations across the relevant areas of the business.
  • Investigate variances and ensure accounting entries are accurate, complete and supported.
  • Work closely with the Financial Controller and wider finance team to deliver an efficient and timely close.

Group Accounting & Consolidation

  • Support group consolidation and intercompany accounting.
  • Review subsidiary financial information and trial balances.
  • Prepare consolidation and elimination entries.
  • Assist with ensuring group reporting is complete and accurate.

Technical Accounting

  • Support the Financial Controller with complex and judgemental accounting matters.
  • Prepare technical accounting papers and supporting analysis where required.
  • Assist with areas including goodwill, impairment testing, acquisition accounting and other complex accounting transactions.
  • Ensure accounting policies are appropriately documented and consistently applied.

R&D and Development Costs

  • Support the accounting treatment and capitalisation of eligible development costs.
  • Maintain appropriate supporting calculations and documentation.
  • Establish clear processes and evidence trails to support the accounting treatment.
  • Assist with ongoing reviews of capitalised balances.

Statutory Reporting & Audit

  • Assist with the preparation of statutory financial statements, including supporting notes and disclosures.
  • Coordinate audit preparation and manage information requests.
  • Act as a key contact for auditors and respond to technical and accounting queries.
  • Ensure audit evidence is complete, clear and readily accessible.

Tax Support

  • Work with the Financial Controller and external advisers on corporation tax and R&D tax matters.
  • Prepare and collate supporting information and analysis.
  • Help improve the efficiency and consistency of the tax reporting process.

Debt & Equity Accounting

  • Assist with accounting for bank debt, interest and related fees.
  • Support accounting for equity instruments and associated transactions.
  • Maintain appropriate reconciliations and supporting documentation.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve the month-end close and financial reporting processes.
  • Develop and document clear, repeatable procedures.
  • Help reduce reliance on manual processes and individual knowledge.
  • Contribute to improving the efficiency and timeliness of the financial close.

What You'll Get

This is an opportunity to take ownership of a broad range of accounting responsibilities while working closely with a Financial Controller on technical and judgemental areas.

The role would suit someone who enjoys technical accounting but also wants to be hands-on, with the opportunity to improve processes and leave a tangible impact on the finance function during the contract.

This is a 12 month FTC paying up to 80k DOE with hybrid working on offer.
