Network Engineer - UK

Gatwick, England, United Kingdom Full-time Posted 2 days ago
Who We Are

We are a global marine geoscience and technology business. We develop software and data solutions that help energy companies understand what lies beneath the ocean floor, supporting more informed and responsible use of the planet’s resources.

At Shearwater, technology underpins everything we do. From global office locations and data centres to vessels operating in some of the world's most remote offshore environments, our network infrastructure is critical to keeping our people, systems, and operations connected.

Can you bring your expertise to our technology?

We're looking for a skilled and motivated Network Engineer to join our IT Operations team. This is an exciting opportunity to work across a truly global network estate, supporting enterprise infrastructure, security, connectivity, and operational excellence while developing your career within a collaborative and forward-thinking technology team.

As a Network Engineer, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operation, administration, monitoring, and support of Shearwater's global network infrastructure. Working closely with the IT Infrastructure Team Lead and Network Architect, you'll help ensure our network services remain secure, resilient, and performant across corporate, data centre, and offshore environments. You'll gain exposure to a diverse technology landscape, including enterprise networking, wireless infrastructure, firewalls, VPN technologies, satellite connectivity, and hybrid global environments. This role also provides a clear pathway for professional growth and development towards a Senior Network Engineer position.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Operating and administering Shearwater's global network infrastructure, including switches, wireless networks, VPNs, DNS, DHCP, and internet connectivity services.
  • Monitoring network availability, performance, and capacity, proactively identifying and addressing potential issues before they impact operations.
  • Investigating and resolving network incidents and service requests whilst meeting agreed service levels.
  • Supporting offshore and maritime connectivity services, including LEO and VSAT communications, working closely with specialist vendors where required.
  • Implementing network changes, upgrades, firmware updates, and maintenance activities through established change management processes.
  • Maintaining network documentation, topology diagrams, configuration baselines, and asset records.
  • Supporting security and compliance initiatives through vulnerability remediation, secure configuration management, and ISO 27001 alignment.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance performance, reliability, automation, and service delivery.

What We're Looking For

What You’ll Need

  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in a Network Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, or similar technical role.
  • Experience supporting multi-site enterprise network environments.
  • Strong understanding of switching, routing, wireless technologies, VPNs, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Experience troubleshooting network issues in complex operational environments.
  • Knowledge of network security principles and firewall administration.
  • Experience engaging with third-party suppliers and telecommunications providers to resolve connectivity issues.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

It would also help, but is not essential, if you bring:

  • Exposure to maritime, offshore, satellite, VSAT, or LEO networking technologies.
  • Industry certifications such as Cisco CCNA, CCNP, Fortinet, Aruba, or equivalent.
  • Experience within security-focused or ISO 27001 environments.
  • Knowledge of network automation, scripting, or infrastructure-as-code technologies.

What You'll Bring

We're looking for more than technical expertise. We're seeking someone who is passionate about technology, committed to service excellence, and motivated by solving complex challenges.

You'll Be

  • Accountable and proactive, taking ownership of issues and driving them through to resolution.
  • A natural problem solver, able to analyse issues methodically and identify sustainable solutions.
  • Collaborative and approachable, building strong relationships across teams and with external partners.
  • Customer-focused, understanding the importance of reliable connectivity to business-critical operations.
  • Continuous improvement minded, always looking for opportunities to simplify, automate, and enhance services.
  • Security-conscious, ensuring best practices, governance requirements, and operational standards are consistently maintained.
  • Adaptable and resilient, remaining calm and effective when responding to incidents in a fast-paced global environment.

What does Shearwater offer you?

At Shearwater, you'll be part of a global technology team supporting world-class operations across office, data centre, and offshore environments.

In Return, You'll Benefit From

  • Exposure to a complex and globally connected network environment.
  • Opportunities to work with modern networking and connectivity technologies.
  • Career development and progression within a growing technology function.
  • A collaborative culture that encourages learning, innovation, and knowledge sharing.
  • The opportunity to make a genuine impact on business-critical operations around the world.

Ready to Apply?

If you're a motivated Network Engineer who thrives on technical challenges, enjoys working in a collaborative environment, and wants to play a key role in supporting a truly global operation, we'd love to hear from you.
