Phlebotomist
We are seeking experienced and motivated Phlebotomists to join our staff bank to support GP practices across Cornwall.
Working on a flexible basis, you will play a key role in delivering safe, effective blood sample collection services, contributing to timely diagnosis and ongoing patient care.
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team within different practice settings, adapting to local systems and processes while maintaining high clinical standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform venepuncture in line with clinical guidelines and best practice
- Ensure patient comfort, dignity, and reassurance throughout procedures
- Confirm patient identity and obtain informed consent
- Label, store, and prepare samples accurately for laboratory testing
- Ensure samples are dispatched promptly in line with protocols
- Maintain accurate clinical records clinical systems
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures at all times
- Report clinical concerns or anomalies appropriately
- Work collaboratively with teams to support service delivery

- Recognised training/qualification in phlebotomy
- Previous experience in a primary care or similar setting
- Ability to work independently and adapt to different practice environments
- Experience using clinical systems
- Strong communication and patient care skills

Shifts are offered on an ad hoc basis depending on service need. You will be expected to maintain mandatory training and competencies
Job responsibilities
Deliver patient care by providing and maintaining a high standard of phlebotomy care for patients. Working under the direction of the Service Lead and as part of a team, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform venepuncture and collect blood samples in line with training, procedures, and service protocols.
- Ensure patient comfort, dignity, and reassurance throughout the process.
- Confirm patient identity against documentation and with the patient wherever possible.
- Obtain informed consent prior to sample collection.
- Accurately and legibly label all samples to ensure correct identification.
- Package, store, and handle samples safely in accordance with guidelines.
- Ensure timely and appropriate dispatch of samples to laboratories.
- Maintain accurate patient records, documenting all procedures as required.
- Report anomalies, incidents, or patient concerns promptly to a senior nurse or GP.
- Work collaboratively with clinical and administrative teams and assist patients, including undertaking chaperoning duties where appropriate.
- You will be expected to carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in line with your main duties, as directed by the service lead.
Essential qualifications
- Relevant qualification in venepuncture
- A first aid certificate or basic healthcare training
- 5 GCSEs Grade 4 or above or equivalent
Desirable qualifications
- A first aid certificate or basic healthcare training
- Accredited phlebotomy courses
- Disclosure and Barring Service Check
