Job Purpose
The Power BI Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering high‑quality financial reporting dashboards that support decision‑making across the business. Working closely with Finance and IT, this role translates financial reporting requirements into robust Power BI solutions, ensuring data accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
The role requires strong financial understanding combined with technical Power BI expertise. The Power BI Developer will gather business requirements, work with IT to ensure required data is available and reliable, and build, test, and iterate dashboards to meet Finance and stakeholder needs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Financial Reporting & Dashboard Development
- Design and develop Power BI dashboards and reports to support financial reporting and analysis.
- Build dashboards covering areas such as management reporting, P&L, balance sheet, margin & cost analysis, and operational finance metrics.
- Ensure reports are clear, intuitive, and aligned with Finance best practice.
- Develop data visualisation solutions that effectively communicate financial information to both finance and non-finance audiences, ensuring key messages are easily understood and actionable. Tailor presentation styles to suit different audiernces, translating complex financial data into clear decision relevant insights
2. Requirements Gathering & Analysis
- Work directly with Finance stakeholders to understand reporting requirements and priorities.
- Translate business and financial requirements into clear reporting specifications.
- Challenge requirements where necessary to ensure accurate, efficient, and scalable reporting.
- Maintain traceability between requirements and delivered dashboards.
3. Data Access & Collaboration with IT
- Work closely with IT and data owners to identify and access required data sources.
- Support the definition of data models, data relationships, and calculations.
- Ensure data used in reports is accurate, trusted, and appropriately governed.
- Escalate data quality or availability issues and support resolution in partnership with IT.
4. Power BI Development & Modelling
- Develop Power BI datasets, data models, and DAX measures.
- Apply best practice in data modelling for performance, scalability, and reuse.
- Manage report versioning, testing, and iterative enhancement.
- Ensure performance optimisation of datasets and reports.
5. Testing, Validation & Sign‑off
- Test dashboards against requirements and underlying financial data.
- Support Finance users in validating outputs and resolving discrepancies.
- Implement feedback and refinements prior to business sign‑off.
- Ensure confidence in the accuracy and reliability of published reports.
6. Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
- Create and maintain documentation for dashboards, datasets, and key calculations.
- Support Finance users in understanding how reports should be used and interpreted.
- Provide knowledge transfer to internal teams as required to support continuity.
Skills/Attributes
Finance & Business Skills
- Strong understanding of financial reporting and core finance concepts (P&L, balance sheet, cost centres, reporting structures).
- Experience working directly with Finance teams and senior stakeholders.
- Ability to translate financial questions into effective reporting solutions.
Technical Skills
- Proven experience developing reports and dashboards in Power BI.
- Strong experience with data modelling and DAX.
- Experience working with multiple data sources (ERP, spreadsheets, data warehouses).
- Understanding of data quality, reconciliation, and validation principles.
- Experience working alongside IT and data teams.
Interpersonal Skills
