The Role

LEC are looking to strengthen our transmission project capability with an experienced Commissioning Officer. This skill set, typically gained within a Transmission Owner such as National Grid, BP141 design assurance (all disciplines), is highly valued at LEC as we support clients across transmission, distribution, renewable, BESS and data centre projects in the UK and overseas. You will bring a strong, pre-existing understanding of power system protection together with hands-on experience of commissioning, design assurance and technical documentation, and apply it to a wider and more varied range of client projects.

The main qualities we are looking for in our candidates include the following: logical thinking, meticulous attention to detail when reviewing drawings, designs and settings, sound engineering judgement when faced with imperfect information or unclear guidance, and the ability to communicate complex technical decisions clearly, both verbally and in writing, to clients and colleagues.

Experienced applicants should meet the following criteria:

▪      Strong, pre-existing understanding of power system protection, with experience connecting new generation to the grid, replacing existing assets and contributing to major transmission infrastructure projects.

▪      Knowledge and experience of commissioning new equipment onto a transmission system, and the ability to write high-level technical documentation to support it.

▪      Ability to interpret and assure technical drawings prior to site commissioning, using an in-depth understanding of safety implications to identify and resolve unsafe design elements.

▪      Strong mathematical and data-analysis skills, with a methodical and highly detailed approach to reviewing drawings, designs, settings and documents before performing engineering calculations.

▪      Foundational understanding of civil, cabling and overhead line design, to coordinate cross-disciplinary engineering interfaces.

▪      Experience managing external contractors and designers to ensure compliance with technical scopes, procedures, specifications and contractual documents.

▪      Ability to act as a trusted technical point of contact, reviewing and writing project- and business-level documentation, and delivering presentations that clearly justify technical decisions.

▪      Commercial awareness of the financial and cost impacts of project scope and design variations.

▪      A university degree in Electrical Power Systems Engineering, or equivalent experience in the power system protection or commissioning field.

▪      National Grid TP141 technical authorisation for Design Assurance and/or as a Commissioning Officer is highly desirable.

▪      Valid UK driving licence and the flexibility to travel as required by the role.
