JOB DESCRIPTION

Due to continued growth, we have an exciting and challenging role for Principal Structural Engineer in our growing team of 150+ Civil & Structural Engineers and Designers. Our department covers a range of projects from Concept Studies through to Detailed Design to provide a variety of interesting work. Industries can range across Roads, Water, Transportation, Energy, Nuclear and Defence.

As a Principal Structural Engineer, you will be working in a multi-disciplinary team delivering infrastructure projects.

You will be responsible for the delivery of civil and structural (buildings and structures) advice, inspections, analysis, calculations, reports and specifications.

Taking responsibility for leading small projects and sub tasks from a technical perspective. Communicate designs effectively to the BIM teams, other disciplines, construction personnel and stakeholders. Attendance occasionally required for site visits, design reviews and client meetings. Support and guide more junior team members. Challenge and deliver value engineering solutions. Confident and authoritative in front of clients.

We are keen to hear from candidates with significant structural engineering experience and proven knowledge of design working practices and installation requirements who can work across a variety of sectors including water, rail, aviation and nuclear. The candidate should have good buildings experience.

This is a full time hybrid role based in Manchester office circa 2-3 days a week, other days will be home-based with site/client office attendance as per business needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities

As a client facing Principal Engineer, your responsibilities could involve:

  • Responsibility for building and structures discipline engineering technical input for projects and/or proposals; including design engineering, preparation, checking and/or approval of engineering documentation
  • Leading smaller scale deliverables for Clients (internal and external)
  • Organising discipline staff, assisting allocating work and ensuring delivery against planned timescales
  • Mentoring and developing graduates and less experienced engineers
  • Production of high-quality C&S engineering deliverables to schedule, budget and client satisfaction
  • Ensuring all applicable national and international codes of practice, legislation and company/client standards and procedures are complied with
  • Ensure that work is carried out with relevant codes, standards and procedures, and maintain and develop awareness of current relevant codes and standards
  • Implement company, and where applicable client/ project policies and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with other disciplines to ensure that interfaces are clearly defined and correctly designed
  • Communicate appropriately with other departments, project personnel, vendors and clients
  • Productions and development of highway specifications
  • Optioneering assessments, defining scopes of work, supporting estimates and business development.
  • More specific tasks could include:
  • Defining client requirements
  • Design of new buildings and structures, assessment of existing structures, checking and approving C&S documentation from others
  • Undertaking condition surveys of existing buildings and structures.
  • Supporting the PM in identifying change, progress reporting, tracking of issues, risks and resolutions

Essential

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Excellent knowledge of design working practices and installation requirements of the discipline across a range of industries, sector experience in Aviation and Rail preferable.
  • Extensive knowledge of UK legislation and standards
  • Awareness of risk identification, quantification, management and of HSE requirements
  • Experience in buildings design/checking.
  • Significant knowledge and understanding of Project Controls, including Schedule, Cost, Risk and Change Management.
  • Collaborative, innovative and agile.
  • Experienced customer facing capability with an ability to develop and influence relationships
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an effective communicator (written & verbal)
  • Experience with new and existing buildings and structures, optioneering assessments, defining scopes of work, supporting estimates and business development.

Desirable

  • Experience in supporting more junior engineers.
  • Sector experience in Aviation and Rail preferable.
  • Sector experience in Nuclear desirable.

  • National Highways Passport

Essential

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Chartered Engineer and Membership of a professional engineering institution
  • Honours Degree or equivalent qualification in an engineering related subject.
  • Able to achieve SC clearance (UK Passport Holder or 5 Years UK Residency)
  • CSCS Card

Desirable

  • Association for Project Management qualification/accreditation
  • CDM qualifications
  • Security Clearance
