About the role
Nanomox Ltd. is developing sustainable processes for the isolation of targeted metals from waste and the development of metallic nanomaterials.
We are seeking an R&D scientist to work on the valorisation of polymetallic waste. This role will focus on the use of hydrometallurgical and ionometallurgical processes for the targeted extraction of critical metals from battery black mass. The scientist, in collaboration with the R&D Lead, will be responsible for the delivery of Nanomox’s portfolio of research activities to support technology and product development. Depending on the experience, the successful candidate will be hired for the R&D Scientist or the Senior R&D Scientist position. This is a fixed-term contract, until March 2028, but may be extended if more funds become available.

Essential:
- PhD in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Metallurgical Engineering or relevant discipline or MSc + 3 years (min) or relevant experience.
- Experience in the development and validation of hydrometallurgical and/or ionometallurgical processes for metal extraction.
- Hands-on experience with metal recovery from polymetallic waste.
- Proficient in working in a chemical laboratory, creating SOPs, maintaining high Health and Safety standards.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, able to collaborate within teams & collaborators.
- Excellent research skills including hypothesis generation, experimental design, and data analysis and interpretation.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral (English), with the ability to produce clear reports for both high-level and technical audiences.
Desirable:
· Experience with battery black mass.
· Proficiency in relevant analytical techniques, e.g. XRD, XRF, SEM/EDX, and chemical characterisation of polymetallic waste e.g. elemental analysis, ICP-MS, TGA, IR, UV-Vis.
· Familiarity with ionic liquids and/or deep eutectic solvents.
Key responsibilities:
· Act as the lead researcher responsible for delivering designated research activities. This will include overall project design and planning, developing a knowledge base to become Nanomox’s expert in the relevant project area.
· Develop and conduct high-quality experimental test plans.
· Keep organised, accurate and up-to-date experimental records in line with organisational practices.
· Report and manage project risks and implement mitigations, in a timely manner.
· Ensure regular and effective communication to ensure Line Manager has visibility on project risks, progress, planning and execution.
· Adhere to, and ensure adherence by other staff to, good laboratory practices and any relevant organisational processes and policies.
· Provide technical and other support for grant applications, as required.
· Support dissemination activities (conferences, tweets, technical reports/publications etc).
· Other responsibilities as designated, from time to time, by the R&D Lead or Head of R&D.
