Senior Design Engineer
Tooling Design Engineer - URGENT START
Based at McLaren Technology Centre in Sheffield
The McLaren Composites Technology Centre is a £190m facility on the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre Park. It is the facility where our carbon fibre tubs are manufactured
6 month contract but will probably be extended .
Will accept hybrid working 2-3 days per week but initially first 3 weeks on site .
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop detailed tooling designs for composite manufacturing applications.
- Design tooling in CATIA V5, with a focus on simplified, function-driven surface design.
- Create and optimise tooling surfaces based on functional requirements and manufacturing needs.
- Work closely with CAE teams to validate tooling designs before final release.
- Support the design of lay-up processes and associated forming tools.
- Assess and ensure manufacturing feasibility of tooling designs.
- Determine the optimum tool orientation for composite preforms to minimise defects during manufacture.
- Lead tooling design direction during the RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) forming phase, working independently to deliver robust tooling solutions.
- Act as the interface between CAE and Manufacturing, ensuring tooling designs are practical, manufacturable, and validated.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including regular engagement with the Sheffield manufacturing site.
- Preferred use of CATIA automation to improve tooling design efficiency where applicable.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Solid experience in tooling design, preferably composite.
- Good understanding of composite manufacturing processes, particularly tooling.
- Proficiency in CATIA V5, including surface modelling.
- Experience working with CAE teams and incorporating analysis into tooling design.
- Knowledge of RTM tooling and composite forming processes.
- Ability to work independently in a senior engineering role.
- Strong understanding of tooling orientation, lay-up processes, and defect prevention in composite manufacturing.
