The opportunity

The Metropolitan Police Service is one of the UK’s most significant public service organisations, serving millions of people across one of the most diverse, complex and high-profile cities in the world. Its work directly affects public safety, community confidence and the effective running of London.

Finance has a critical role to play in that mission. The Met operates in a demanding financial environment, where leaders need clear insight, robust challenge and practical options to help them make decisions that protect value for money while supporting operational priorities.

As Senior Finance Business Partner, you will provide timely, accurate and clearly communicated financial management advice, insight and analysis to senior leaders, budget holders and operational leads. You will help ensure finances are managed effectively from planning and forecasting through to decision support, enabling the organisation to make informed choices in a complex and changing environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for a finance professional who enjoys strategic partnering, senior stakeholder engagement and using financial insight to influence better decisions across a major public service organisation.

About the Metropolitan Police

The Met is London’s police service, serving one of the most diverse populations in the world. Its officers and staff work every day to keep people safe, respond to evolving demand and build trust with the communities they serve.

Joining the Met means contributing to a clear public service mission. For finance professionals, this offers the opportunity to apply commercial judgement, technical expertise and strategic insight in a setting where financial decisions have real-world impact.

The organisation is also modernising the way its enabling services operate. Within Finance, there is a strong focus on customer-centred support, robust financial control, trusted data, standardised processes and forward-looking advice. Supported by Met Business Services, the function is evolving to provide better insight, greater efficiency and more effective decision support across the organisation.

About the role

As Senior Finance Business Partner, you will act as a key link between Finance and the business areas you support. You will provide insight, challenge and professional analytical support at both strategic and operational levels, helping leaders understand performance, identify risks and opportunities, and make decisions that support value for money.

Reporting to your Head of Finance Business Partnering, you will work closely with budget holders, operational leads, Strategic Finance Business Partners, Management Accounting and Insight, Strategic Finance, Financial Accounting and Assurance, Commercial colleagues and external stakeholders including MOPAC, the Home Office and NPCC.

This role will suit someone who can combine technical finance capability with strong communication, professional credibility and the confidence to challenge constructively.

Key responsibilities

You will:

• Provide financial insight, challenge and analytical support to senior stakeholders, budget holders and operational leads.

• Support the effective management of finances across planning, forecasting, reporting and decision support.

• Help identify financial risks, opportunities and options to support performance improvement and cost reduction.

• Work with Management Accounting and Insight colleagues to interpret actual results and forecasts, turning analysis into clear recommendations.

• Build trusted relationships with senior business stakeholders, influencing decisions through professional credibility and sound financial advice.

• Support the development and implementation of financial strategy across the business areas you support.

• Work with project, policy and programme leads to ensure business cases are robust, commercially focused and aligned with governance requirements.

• Support the budget and strategic planning process, including analysis of proposals, savings plans and financial assumptions.

• Work collaboratively with Commercial colleagues to support value for money across key contracts.

• Help build financial capability and understanding across the business through clear guidance, challenge and advice.

About you

You will be CCAB, CIMA or equivalent qualified, although candidates working towards qualification may be considered in exceptional circumstances. You will bring substantial experience of financial management in a large, complex organisation and will be comfortable advising senior stakeholders on financial decisions, risks and governance.

You will also offer:

• Experience of providing financial advice, insight and challenge in a complex environment.

• Strong understanding of financial management, planning, forecasting and reporting.

• Experience working within corporate governance frameworks, supporting compliance and risk management.

• The ability to build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders and influence with credibility.

• Experience analysing complex financial issues and communicating findings to varied audiences.

• Strong oral and written presentation skills, with the ability to explain financial issues clearly to non-finance colleagues.

• A proactive, collaborative approach and the ability to work across organisational boundaries.

• Experience supporting teams or colleagues to build capability and deliver high performance.

Why join the Metropolitan Police Service?

This is a chance to use your finance expertise in an organisation where the quality of financial advice directly supports public service delivery. The decisions you help shape will influence how resources are prioritised, how value for money is achieved and how the Met responds to the needs of London’s communities.

For a finance professional, the Met offers scale, complexity and purpose. You will work with senior leaders on high-value budgets, challenging performance issues and strategic choices that matter to the organisation and the public it serves.

You will also be joining an organisation that serves one of the most diverse cities in the world. The Met’s mission is rooted in public service, trust and accountability, and finance has an important role in ensuring public funds are used responsibly, transparently and effectively.

This role is particularly well suited to someone who enjoys being close to the business, acting as a critical friend and helping senior stakeholders turn financial information into action. You will have the opportunity to influence, challenge and support decisions that help the Met deliver better outcomes for Londoners.
