Senior Financial Controller required for an Energy business based in London!

£100,000 - £110,000 + bonus and benefits, dependent on experience

We are partnering with a leading energy trading business to appoint a Senior Financial Controller into its London finance team.

Operating across complex commodity trading activities, the business has established a strong market presence and continues to invest in both its finance function and wider trading infrastructure. This role offers the opportunity to work at the heart of a dynamic trading environment, supporting the integrity of financial reporting while helping to drive improvements in financial control processes and capabilities.

The successful candidate will act as a key subject matter expert across accounting and control matters, partnering closely with Product Control, Business Finance, Technical Accounting, Audit and Technology teams.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced finance professional with commodity trading experience who enjoys combining strong technical accounting expertise with process improvement and stakeholder engagement.

A little more information about the role:

• Act as a senior financial control subject matter expert, ensuring the quality and integrity of financial reporting across a complex commodity trading business.
• Review and assess the accounting implications of complex trading transactions and commercial arrangements, providing clear and commercially focused guidance to stakeholders.
• Support the month-end, quarter-end and year-end close processes, ensuring robust controls and accurate financial reporting.
• Partner closely with Product Control, Business Finance and Technical Accounting teams to ensure alignment between trading activity, valuation outputs and accounting treatment.
• Maintain a strong control environment, identifying risks, challenging existing processes and implementing improvements where appropriate.
• Support external and internal audit activity, coordinating responses and ensuring accounting matters are managed proactively.
• Drive process enhancement initiatives across the financial control function, with a particular focus on reducing manual activities, improving data quality and increasing efficiency.
• Work alongside technology and finance transformation teams to improve reporting capabilities, workflow automation and the use of financial data.
• Build strong relationships across the trading and finance communities, becoming a trusted adviser on accounting and control matters.
• Contribute to the continued development of the financial control function and support the evolution of its operating model.

To successfully deliver in the profile position, you will need to have:

• Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or equivalent)
• Significant experience in financial control/accounting roles, with a strong foundation in accounting principles and control disciplines relevant to trading businesses.
• Demonstrable experience in commodity trading finance, with clear understanding of the accounting considerations associated with physical commodities; broader trading finance exposure may be helpful, but physical commodities knowledge is strongly preferred.
• The ability to assess complex deals and transactions, identify key accounting implications, and explain conclusions in a clear, commercially aware way.
• Experience working with or alongside functions such as product control, technical accounting, audit, and business finance.
• Evidence of improving, redesigning, or helping implement more effective finance processes, especially where manual or spreadsheet-based activities have been reduced.
• Comfortable working in a digitally evolving environment and collaborating with technology teams to enhance reporting, workflow, and data usage.
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to present views confidently, influence stakeholders, and navigate robust professional debate.
