Senior Interaction Designer – Public Services


The Role


The Senior Interaction Designer is responsible for designing, validating, and optimising user interactions across digital services and products, with a particular focus on pensions and retirement solutions.


This role ensures that complex pensions journeys—such as enrolment, contributions, transfers, retirement planning, and decumulation—are intuitive, accessible, and compliant, while advising stakeholders and guiding less experienced designers.


They operate with a high level of autonomy, influencing design direction and ensuring that user needs and regulatory considerations are embedded into all interaction design outcomes.

Key Responsibilities


User-Centred Design


  • Lead the design of end-to-end user journeys across pensions products (e.g., auto-enrolment, member dashboards, retirement pathways).
  • Apply user-centred design principles to simplify complex financial and regulatory processes.
  • Incorporate insights from user research within pensions contexts, including diverse user groups (e.g., members, employers, administrators).


Interaction Design & Prototyping


  • Create wireframes, prototypes, and interaction models for pensions platforms and services.
  • Design clear and accessible experiences for:
  • Pension contributions and fund selection
  • Transfers and consolidation
  • Retirement income options (drawdown, annuities)
  • Validate and iterate designs through usability testing, particularly for financial comprehension and decision-making clarity.


Stakeholder Engagement


  • Collaborate with product owners, compliance teams, actuaries, and engineers.
  • Communicate design solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Advise on UX strategy within pensions, ensuring alignment with regulatory and consumer duty expectations.


Design Governance & Standards


  • Ensure designs comply with:
  • Accessibility standards (WCAG)
  • Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) guidelines and consumer duty requirements
  • Contribute to design systems and reusable patterns relevant to financial services.
  • Promote clarity, transparency, and trust in user interactions.


Delivery & Continuous Improvement


  • Work within agile teams to deliver incremental improvements to pensions products.
  • Use analytics and user feedback to improve engagement and outcomes (e.g., contribution increases, retirement readiness).
  • Identify opportunities to improve digital adoption and user satisfaction in pensions services.


Leadership & Mentoring


  • Mentor junior designers and advocate for user-centred design in financial services.
  • Influence design thinking across teams working on pensions-related initiatives.
  • Support organisational understanding of UX challenges in pensions and long-term savings products.


Skills & Experience


Essential Skills


  • Strong experience in interaction design, UX design, or service design.
  • Demonstrable experience working on pensions platforms or retirement products.
  • Ability to simplify complex financial concepts into intuitive user experiences.
  • Proficiency with design tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch).
  • Experience with user research and usability testing in regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG).


Desirable Skills


  • Understanding of UK pensions landscape, including defined contribution schemes and auto-enrolment.
  • Familiarity with financial regulations (e.g., FCA Consumer Duty).
  • Experience designing member-facing dashboards or employer portals.
  • Exposure to analytics tools for data-driven UX improvements.
  • Basic understanding of front-end technologies.
