The Role
As a Senior Java Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, building, and delivering secure, scalable microservices using Java and Spring frameworks within a regulated banking environment. You will take ownership of solution design, development, and delivery across the full software lifecycle, ensuring strong performance, resilience, and security. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions and continuously improve engineering standards.
Your responsibilities:
- Design and develop cloud-native microservices using Java (17/21) with Spring Boot and Spring Cloud.
- Define architecture and integration patterns for distributed systems, ensuring resilience and scalability.
- Develop secure REST APIs and event-driven services aligned with enterprise standards.
- Collaborate with architects, product owners, QA, and DevOps teams to deliver solutions in Agile environments.
- Drive engineering excellence through TDD/BDD practices, automated testing, and code reviews.
- Design and optimise data models using SQL, JPA/Hibernate, and performance tuning techniques.
- Build and manage API contracts using OpenAPI/Swagger and ensure backward compatibility.
- Implement secure application design using Spring Security, OAuth2, and JWT.
- Ensure system observability through logging, monitoring, and tracing using modern tools.
- Deploy and manage applications using Docker and Kubernetes/OpenShift, supporting CI/CD and GCP deployments.
- Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive continuous improvement.
- Mentor team members and promote best engineering practices across the team.
Your Profile
Essential skills/knowledge/experience:
- Strong hands-on experience in Java development (Java 11/17/21) using Spring Boot and Spring ecosystem.
- Expertise in microservices and distributed systems design, including REST APIs and event-driven architecture.
- Experience with testing frameworks and practices such as JUnit, Mockito, Cucumber, and TDD/BDD.
- Strong knowledge of SQL and relational databases, including data modelling and optimisation.
- Experience with containerisation and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes/OpenShift.
- Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably Google Cloud Platform.
- Strong understanding of security practices, including OAuth2, JWT, and secure coding standards.
- Experience with CI/CD tools and automated deployment pipelines.
- Familiarity with observability tools such as Splunk, Elasticsearch, Grafana, or Kibana.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Desirable skills/knowledge/experience:
- Experience with Kafka or JMS for event-driven systems.
- Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
- Experience in platform engineering or SRE practices.
- Strong knowledge of GCP services such as GKE, Cloud Run, or Pub/Sub.
- Experience within banking, financial services, or other regulated environments.
- Familiarity with large-scale data processing or search technologies such as Elasticsearch or Spark.
