Description

McBains is seeking a high-calibre, motivated and ambitious Structural Project Design Engineer to join our growing Structural Engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity to work across a diverse portfolio of projects within the residential, industrial, defence, commercial, education, healthcare and mixed-use sectors. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of multiple projects, working closely with Directors, Associate Directors, clients and multidisciplinary design teams.

The role offers exposure to the full project lifecycle, from master planning and concept design through to detailed design and construction (RIBA workstages 1 to 6). Candidates should possess strong technical skills and knowledge of the relevant design codes, be confident managing projects and clients, a sound understanding of engineering principles and construction methods, health and safety legislation.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Design

• Undertake concept design calculations, feasibility studies and structural sketches with support from Senior Engineers
• Deliver detailed structural design solutions for reinforced concrete, structural steel and timber structures.
• Undertake masonry design where appropriate.
• Prepare structural calculations in accordance with relevant structural design codes and guidance. Challenging where necessary.
• Produce and review technical reports, specifications and engineering assessments.
• Assist in the preparation of RIBA Stage reports and project deliverables.
• Ensure your designs are practical, coordinated and buildable with assistance where needed from a Senior member of the team.
  
  

Project Delivery

• Beginning to manage and deliver a range of structural engineering projects simultaneously with support, progressing in size and complexity as your experience grows.
• Coordinate project information and design outputs to meet programme and budget requirements.
• Monitor project progress and report on key milestones and risks.
• Attend and contribute to client, project and design team meetings.
• Undertake site visits, inspections and surveys as required.
• Support the commercial management of projects and contribute to fee delivery targets.
  
  

BIM and Digital Engineering

• Prepare sketch mark-ups and design information for REVIT Technicians.
• Liaise with BIM teams to ensure BIM Level 2 compliance within REVIT models and drawing packages.
• Promote the use of digital engineering tools and innovative design approaches where appropriate and deemed efficient based on discussion with the senior team.
• Support the development and implementation of emerging technologies and workflows.
  
  

Collaboration and Client Management

• Develop strong working relationships with clients, architects, contractors and other consultants.
• Liaise effectively with multidisciplinary design teams to develop coordinated design solutions as well as external consultancies
• Represent McBains professionally in meetings and stakeholder engagements.
• Contribute to maintaining and enhancing client relationships.
  
  

Health, Safety and Quality

• Ensure compliance with current health and safety legislation, including CDM Regulations.
• Promote safe design principles throughout all project stages.
• Adhere to McBains' Quality Management System and company procedures.
• Maintain accurate project records and documentation.
  
  

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential

• Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Working towards chartership (MIStructE or MICE)
• Proven experience in structural engineering design and project delivery.
• Strong knowledge of Eurocodes and UK design standards.
• Experience in the design of reinforced concrete, steel and timber structures.
• Proficiency in Finite Element Analysis software and its appropriate use
• Excellent communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  
  

Desirable

• Experience in Structural Steelwork and Reinforced Concrete high rise preferred. In-depth working knowledge of Robot Structural Analysis and Tekla
• Working knowledge of 3D REVIT to assist collaboration.
• Understanding / Experience of BIM Level 2 processes and project delivery.
• Interest in Digital Engineering and computational design tools including Rhino and Grasshopper.
