Role Overview

The Technology Director is responsible for leading the technology strategy and capability of the business across Artificial Intelligence, Technology Infrastructure and Software Development.

This is a strategic leadership role, but it is not purely strategic. The Technology Director will be accountable for turning business priorities into practical technology solutions, ensuring the organisation has the platforms, infrastructure, development capability and AI strategy required to operate efficiently and scale.

The role will lead the continued development of the company's technology estate, with a particular focus on embedding AI intelligently across the organisation, building robust and scalable infrastructure, improving internal systems and data flows, and leading the development function to deliver high-quality technology at pace.

The Technology Director will work closely with the CEO and senior leadership team to ensure technology is not simply a support function, but a commercial enabler of growth, productivity, innovation and competitive advantage.

Key Responsibilities

AI Strategy and Transformation

  • Own and lead the company's AI strategy, establishing where AI can create genuine commercial and operational value across the organisation.
  • Identify opportunities to automate processes, improve productivity, enhance content and data capabilities, improve customer experiences and reduce unnecessary manual work.
  • Develop an AI roadmap that moves the business from individual tool adoption towards integrated, scalable AI capability.
  • Lead the assessment and implementation of AI platforms, models, agents, automation and emerging technologies.
  • Establish appropriate AI governance, security and responsible-use standards while ensuring governance does not unnecessarily slow innovation.
  • Work directly with functional leaders to identify high-value use cases and measure the commercial and operational impact of AI implementation.
  • Create an organisation in which employees understand how to use AI effectively and where AI becomes embedded into everyday workflows rather than operating as a standalone initiative.

Technology Infrastructure

  • Own the overall technology infrastructure strategy, ensuring systems are secure, reliable, scalable, integrated and appropriate for the future direction of the business.
  • Take responsibility for cloud infrastructure, networks, platforms, integrations, business-critical systems, access management and the wider technology environment.
  • Ensure appropriate cybersecurity, resilience, disaster recovery, business continuity, backup and risk-management arrangements are maintained.
  • Review the existing technology estate and identify opportunities to consolidate platforms, remove duplication, improve integration and reduce unnecessary technology expenditure.
  • Ensure infrastructure can support significant increases in users, data, products, customers and geographic operations without requiring disproportionate increases in cost or complexity.
  • Maintain appropriate relationships with key technology suppliers and hold vendors accountable for performance, service and commercial value.

Software and Product Development

  • Provide leadership and direction to the development function, establishing clear priorities, standards and accountability.
  • Own the technology development roadmap and ensure development resources are aligned with the highest-value business priorities.
  • Oversee the architecture, development, testing, deployment and ongoing improvement of internal and customer-facing technology.
  • Create an effective development environment with clear ownership, disciplined delivery and appropriate documentation.
  • Ensure technical debt, legacy systems and development risks are understood and actively managed.
  • Establish appropriate development methodologies, release processes, quality standards and performance measures.
  • Work with stakeholders across the organisation to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
  • Build rather than buy where this creates genuine strategic advantage, while avoiding unnecessary bespoke development where established technology provides a better commercial solution.

Data, Integration and Architecture

  • Work with the business's data capability to create a coherent technology and data architecture.
  • Ensure systems communicate effectively and information can move securely and reliably between platforms.
  • Support the development of a technology environment that enables better analytics, automation, personalisation and AI.
  • Establish clear architectural principles so that new technology decisions contribute to a scalable overall ecosystem rather than creating additional disconnected systems.
  • Ensure the business has appropriate controls around data access, security, quality and governance.

Technology Leadership

  • Lead, develop and hold accountable the technology and development teams, creating a high-performance culture focused on delivery and continuous improvement.
  • Establish clear objectives, KPIs, priorities and ownership across the function.
  • Assess the capability required for the next stage of the company's growth and develop the appropriate team structure, skills and succession plans.
  • Create a culture where technical teams understand the commercial reason behind what they are building, rather than simply responding to requests.
  • Build strong relationships across the organisation and communicate complex technical matters clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Challenge existing ways of working where technology can provide a better solution.

Commercial and Strategic Leadership

  • Operate as a senior business leader, contributing to wider company strategy and decision-making.
  • Develop and own the technology budget, ensuring investment is focused on measurable business outcomes.
  • Build robust business cases for significant technology investments and demonstrate expected return on investment.
  • Identify opportunities for technology to increase revenue, improve margin, increase productivity, reduce cost or create new products and services.
  • Establish meaningful technology KPIs and regularly report progress, risks, investment requirements and business impact to the CEO and senior leadership team.
  • Ensure technology decisions are made with the future scale and potential strategic value of the business in mind.

Key Outcomes

  • Success in this role will mean that the company has a clear and commercially focused technology strategy; AI is embedded meaningfully throughout the organisation; infrastructure is secure, resilient and capable of supporting growth; development delivers against clear commercial priorities; technology and data systems are increasingly integrated; manual processes are reduced through automation; technology expenditure delivers demonstrable value; and the business can grow without technology becoming a constraint.
  • The Technology Director will ultimately be accountable for ensuring that AI, infrastructure and development collectively make the business faster, smarter, more scalable and more valuable.

Experience and Capability

The successful candidate will be an experienced senior technology leader with a strong understanding of software development, infrastructure and emerging AI technologies.

They will have experience leading technical teams and delivering significant technology transformation, with the ability to move comfortably between strategic decision-making and practical execution.

They will understand modern cloud environments, software architecture, integrations, cybersecurity, data and development practices and will have a strong working understanding of generative AI, automation and the rapidly evolving AI technology landscape.

Commercial judgement will be equally important. The Technology Director must be able to prioritise investment, challenge unnecessary expenditure, quantify the value of technology initiatives and understand how technology contributes directly to growth and profitability.

Above all, we are looking for someone who combines technical credibility with business leadership someone capable of building the technology function the business will need in three to five years, rather than simply maintaining the technology it uses today.

Leadership Profile

This role requires a leader who is commercially minded, curious and comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment. They should be decisive without becoming rigid, technically ambitious without pursuing technology for technology's sake, and capable of challenging senior stakeholders constructively.

They will be expected to take ownership, simplify complexity, develop people, communicate clearly and deliver.
