This role can be based in Northern Research Station, Roslin, Midlothian EH25 9SY or in Alice Holt Lodge, Farnham GU10 4LH with blended working. This gives you the option to work some of the week from home, and some of the week from the workplace. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process. Job Summary
Part of the Forestry Commission family, Forest Research is a world leader in applied forest science, providing evidence and practical solutions to policy makers, forestry practitioners, land managers and anyone with green space, UK-wide. With climate and biodiversity in crisis, and an increasing number of pests and diseases, our research is more vital than ever before. We advise on how woodlands can help combat climate change. We’re identifying tree species that will thrive in the future and ways of safeguarding those species at risk. Our research supports UK timber production because fewer imports reduce carbon emissions. We provide data on forests in Scotland, Wales and England, and provide evidence of the societal benefits of woodland. We do all this working collaboratively with academia, partners and industry, nationally and internationally.
The post holder will be a member of the Urban Forest Research Group. This Science Group informs policy, planning and practice through research into urban trees and the urban forest. Our research provides information to government, local authorities, research institutes, professional bodies, consultants, and practitioners to support the delivery of healthy, multipurpose and resilient urban forests.
We work collaboratively within our group, within Forest Research, and with our wide external network. We have a particular interest in strengthening the evidence base for the wide range of benefits that urban trees provide to society. Our work encompasses species selection, amenity tree valuation, and quantifying the extent and composition of urban forests and the benefits they provide.

- Work with the Project Leader to conduct a series of reviews of aerial photographs to generate understanding in the temporal changes in tree presence.
- Provide project support within the Urban Forest Research Group.
Job Description

- Review aerial photos to quantify the presence of trees; repeat the analysis for photos of different age to generate an understanding of change over time. This will be completed under line manager guidance and following a prescribed method.
- Present the data to line manager and project members.
- Regularly report progress to line manager and colleagues through written, digital, and verbal communication in a range of appropriate styles.
- Be a member of the Urban Forest Research Group and support group members in other work areas as needed. These include fieldwork, retrieving literature from the worldwide-web, and attending team meetings.

- Degree in environmental sciences, geography, urban forestry or similar discipline, with experience of carrying out research.
- Experience in communicating results, and expressing ideas and summaries effectively, both verbally and in writing, for audiences such as team members and line manager

- Strong team-working ability as well as working independently
- Excellent computer skills, including experience of use of Microsoft Office applications
