Workday Engineer / Apprentice
About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and intellectually curious individual to join our Enterprise Resource Planning team as a Workday Engineer / Apprentice. This is a structured, hands-on learning role designed for someone at the beginning of their Workday journey – or someone looking to formalise existing exposure – who has the ambition to grow into a proficient Workday practitioner across multiple functional and technical domains.
Rather than dropping you into the deep end, we believe in scaffolded growth. You will work alongside experienced Workday consultants and functional leads, progressively taking ownership of configuration, testing, and support activities across Workday's expansive product suite. The right candidate will be inquisitive by nature, comfortable with ambiguity, and energised by the prospect of becoming a certified Workday expert over a period.
What You Will Do
Your responsibilities will evolve as your confidence and capability grow. In the first phase, you will shadow and assist; in the second, you will deliver with support; in the third, you will lead with oversight. Broadly, your day-to-day will include:
Phase 1 – Foundation
• Shadow senior Workday engineers on live configuration tasks and system updates
• Assist with basic HCM configuration changes – job profiles, organisations, positions, and supervisory structures
• Participate in tenant management activities including weekly maintenance and release preparation
• Support business-as-usual (BAU) ticket resolution under close supervision
• Complete mandatory Workday training modules as directed
Phase 2 – Development
• Independently manage configuration within assigned functional areas (e.g. Absence, Compensation, Talent)
• Write and optimise Workday reports using Report Writer and Calculated Fields
• Participate in end-to-end testing of system enhancements, including writing and executing test scripts
• Support integrations monitoring and assist in troubleshooting Workday Studio or EIB (Enterprise Interface Builder) pipelines
• Contribute to functional design documents, solution design records, and test strategies
• Engage in Workday Community and stay current on new feature releases and bi-annual updates
Phase 3 – Ownership
• Lead configuration of at least one Workday module end-to-end with minimal oversight
• Participate in or lead discovery workshops with business stakeholders
• Mentor newer apprentices or junior team members joining after you
• Represent the team in Workday Community discussions and cross-functional working groups
• Work towards Workday Pro certification(s) in your specialist area(s)
Required Skills & Experience
The following are baseline requirements. We hire for potential, not just pedigree – if you meet most of these, we strongly encourage you to apply.
Must-Have Skills & Knowledge
· A genuine curiosity about HR technology and enterprise platforms
· Ability to follow structured processes, document your work clearly, and communicate effectively
· Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel for data work, Word, PowerPoint)
· Willingness to pursue Workday Pro Certification within the apprenticeship period
· Strong analytical and problem-solving mindset
· Basic familiarity with HR concepts (e.g. payroll cycles, leave management, performance reviews)
· Ability to manage multiple tasks, adapt to shifting priorities, and meet deadlines
Good to Have
These skills will accelerate your onboarding and increase your immediate impact, but are by no means gatekeepers to your application:
· Prior exposure to Workday HCM (even through academic or personal exploration)
· Understanding of Workday Report Writer, Prism Analytics, or Calculated Fields
· Experience with EIB (Enterprise Interface Builder) or Workday Studio basics
· Exposure to Agile / Scrum methodologies or working in a sprint-based team
· Understanding of data privacy regulations (GDPR, etc.) as they apply to HR data
· Experience with any HRIS platform (SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle HCM, ADP, etc.)
· Familiarity with XML, XSLT, or REST/SOAP APIs – useful for integrations work
· Knowledge of Workday security model: role-based and user-based security groups
· Workday Community membership or self-directed study via Workday Learning
· Prior experience in a shared services, IT support, or HR operations function
