Job Purpose

To provide technical support for the school's theatre, performances, production, exams and events programme, ensuring that all audio, lighting, video and stage equipment is maintained, safe and ready for use.

The postholder will support lessons, rehearsals, performances, productions, assemblies and other school events, whilst also undertaking routine equipment checks, maintenance and servicing of technical musical equipment, theatre lighting and associated equipment.

The role requires flexibility and will predominantly involve evening working during rehearsal and performance periods, together with occasional weekend commitments.

Key Responsibilities

Theatre and Production Support

  • Provide technical support for school productions, performances, concerts, showcases and other events.
  • Attend and support rehearsals as required.
  • Operate and support sound, lighting and projection systems during performances and events.
  • Assist with the set-up, operation and dismantling of technical equipment.
  • Work alongside staff and students involved in productions to ensure the smooth running of events.
  • Support the development of student technical theatre teams where appropriate.

Lighting, Video and Sound Systems

  • Undertake routine servicing, testing and maintenance of theatre lighting, sound and video equipment.
  • Ensure sound equipment, lighting rigs, lanterns, dimmers, control systems and associated equipment remain operational and safe.
  • Support the programming and operation of lighting and sound systems for productions and events.
  • Identify and report equipment faults, repairs and replacement requirements.

Equipment Management

  • Maintain an inventory of theatre and AV equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is securely stored and appropriately maintained.
  • Carry out regular inspections and safety checks of sound, lighting and staging equipment.
  • Maintain records of equipment checks, servicing and repairs.
  • Monitor stock levels of consumables and advise on replacement requirements.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure all technical equipment is used in accordance with relevant health and safety requirements.
  • Undertake routine checks to ensure compliance with electrical and equipment safety standards.
  • Ensure cabling, staging and technical equipment are installed safely and do not present hazards.
  • Promote safe working practices during rehearsals, productions and events.

General Duties

  • Work flexibly to support the school's programme of performances and events.
  • Liaise with teaching staff, external contractors and visiting performers where required.
  • Support the school's commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.

Working Pattern

This post is contracted for 10 hours per week and will operate on a flexible basis to meet the needs of the school's events programme.

Hours are likely to include:

  • Evenings during rehearsals and performances.
  • Occasional weekend events.
  • Additional hours during peak production periods, balanced across the working year.

Working arrangements will be agreed with the Head of Sixth Form.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience of supporting live events, performances or productions.
  • Practical knowledge of theatre lighting and sound equipment.
  • Ability to undertake routine equipment maintenance and safety checks.
  • Good organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work flexibly, including evenings and occasional weekends.

Desirable

  • Experience working within a school, theatre or performing arts environment.
  • Experience operating theatre lighting desks and sound systems.
  • Knowledge of stage management and production processes.
  • Relevant technical qualification or training.
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements relating to theatre and AV equipment.
