Job Introduction

An opportunity is available for a Craftsperson Fitter based within the Plant Centre at our depot in Ty Coch., Cwmbran.

In this role you will be required to undertake maintenance of plant and switchgear up to 66kV.

Candidates are required to have Grade A*-C/4-9 GCSE in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level qualification in both subjects.

Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

Main Responsibilities

In this role you will assemble package sub-stations, metering units and automation equipment. Acceptance testing and protection testing will also be part of your duties as such you will need to have fundamental electrical knowledge and basic electronic principals understanding.

Ideal Candidate

You will ideally have Fitting experience and will have an understanding of the electricity distribution network and the main equipment used within it.

You must be able to work on your own initiative as part of a small team, making on the spot decisions as required and working to tight deadlines. A flexible attitude is essential, as you will be required to undertake other duties to assist the team in meeting its objectives.

If not already attained, the successful candidate will be required to study for the relevant City & Guilds Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering and complete TAR – which includes daily diary page completion, and a number of tasks and reports as required.

You will need to be mobile throughout the area as you may be required to undertake standby duties and operationally we require you to live within 45 minutes of the depot..

Consideration will be given to applicants who do not possess all the skills required to undertake the role at present, but have the confidence and ability to reach the necessary standards with appropriate training.

  • Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Potential candidates should be aware that for some of the National Grid positions that require working at height, or use fall arrest devices, there is an upper weight limit 135kg due to maximum safe working load of the safety equipment that is used.
