Financial Analyst – R&D

The Financial Analyst will contribute to the preparation of financial
management information including accurate R&D budgets, monthly income and expenditure reports and financial forecasts.
The Financial Analyst will support the Senior Financial Analyst and R&D Finance manage by reviewing the R&D budget reports, analysing variances from plan, and ensuring that action on changes that are required is taken. The post-holder will provide information and analysis to Research Leads and support them in interpreting their finance report.
The key skills required are those for interrogating all the various sub-systems of the finance ledger and to have a good working knowledge of the operation of these systems and the basic accounting
principles involved. Since there will be a significant involvement in developing and updating spreadsheets, advanced spreadsheet skills are required.
The R&D Finance team is part of the Financial Income and Planning team. The R&D Finance team provides financial support, both operational and strategic, to the Trust’s R&D Directorate and hosted research networks.

- To generate and maintain R&D budget reports and other spreadsheet based reports in accordance with agreed timetables and department policies and procedures.
- To review R&D budget reports and to investigate significant variances by interrogating all the financial ledger sub-systems, summarising the Updated 16 April 2014 conclusions in spreadsheet and other forms for use by the Research Finance Manager and other finance staff.
- To prepare costing spreadsheets for budget setting and for financial planning.
- To meet regularly with budget holders and to provide information and analysis to them. To resolve queries from research budget holders regarding financial management matters with minimal supervision.
- To facilitate the flow of information between researchers and other departments within Finance
- To assist with the production of external service agreements and internal recharge agreements to facilitate the development of new R&D initiatives including the Comprehensive Research Network.
- To explain relevant regulations from the Trusts Standing Financial Instructions to individual members of staff
- To recommend improvements and changes to local working practices
- To comply with the requirements of the Data Protection Act with regard to the confidentiality of personal information and patient confidentiality.
- To undertake any other duties as required, which are consistent with the grade and nature of the post.
