Job Purpose
National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is developing and constructing a series of HVDC projects along the East and West coasts of the UK. These projects will be delivered either through joint venture partnerships with the two Scottish Transmission Owners (TOs) or solely by NGET. Through The Great Grid Upgrade, we're building the infrastructure that will connect cleaner energy sources, strengthen energy security, and power millions of homes and businesses for decades to come.
We are recruiting several Head of Delivery roles. These individuals will be responsible for the development, consenting, installation, and commissioning of works associated with HV substations, HVDC converter stations, and HVAC and HVDC cables, covering both onshore and offshore activities. This is more than a job. It's an opportunity to play a defining role in shaping the future of Britain's energy system and leave a legacy that generations will benefit from.
As projects enter the procurement and delivery phases, successful candidates will become key members of the project leadership team, responsible for delivering all aspects of the works. Typically, each work package will be valued at more than £1 billion.
We are recruiting nationally; however, we have a particular focus on the North East, North West, and East of England, including London, due to project demands. We're happy to discuss flexible working arrangements to support your work-life balance.
What You'll Do
A competitive salary of up to circa £100,000 base salary, plus a comprehensive benefits package, depending on experience.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a company car or allowance, a bonus of up to 40% of your salary for stretch performance, and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, a salary sacrifice technology scheme, support via the employee assistance line, and matched charity giving to name a few.

What You'll Do
- Take ownership of defining projects during the development phase, successfully integrating multiple EPC contracts into a collaborative and high-performing project delivery model.
- Lead by example to drive a strong safety culture and uphold the highest standards of Health & Safety.
- Build and maintain a strong, open, and constructive relationship with Ofgem, ensuring the regulator is engaged throughout the project lifecycle and has a clear understanding of the challenges associated with delivering this major programme of work.
- Develop, manage, and administer complex, multi-faceted budgets and investment plans, undertaking regular cost and productivity analyses to evaluate performance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Be responsible to the Programme/Project Director for recruiting and building a multi-disciplinary team through a range of sourcing strategies, including fixed-term contracts, permanent hires, and professional services.
- Provide coaching, guidance, direction, and leadership to the project team, ensuring resources align with budget and business plan objectives.
- Lead the identification and implementation of opportunities, alongside effective risk management, to ensure delivery of agreed outputs within the applicable regulatory framework.
- Ensure all project milestones are achieved or exceeded.
- Oversee the integration of activities across multiple major project operations, ensuring project delivery is cohesive, consistent, and effective in supporting National Grid's vision, goals, and strategic objectives.
- Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline, you will bring extensive experience in construction project/programme and contract management, with a proven track record of delivering major energy infrastructure projects at a senior level.
- You will have led large, complex programmes through the full project lifecycle to commissioning, enabling high-performing teams to deliver innovative, efficient, and effective outcomes.
- A strong communicator and influential leader, you will have experience managing and engaging stakeholders, customers, and partner organisations, whilst leading large, geographically dispersed teams.
- Strong commercial acumen is essential, including experience developing commercial strategies, identifying and managing risk, and negotiating complex multi-contract and EPC agreements.
- You will have a proven ability to build strong relationships, drive commercial value and performance through major contracts, and lead change and business improvement across complex projects, programmes, or organisations.
- Significant experience managing complex commercial arrangements, negotiating and administering large contracts, and overseeing substantial capital and operating budgets is also required.
