The Head of Internal Audit leads The Crown Estate’s internal audit function and provides independent assurance to the Audit Committee on the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management and governance. As the organisation’s third line of defence, the role ensures objective oversight, high‑quality audit delivery and clear insight that supports responsible stewardship and organisational performance.

Purpose of Role:
The Head of Internal Audit leads The Crown Estate’s internal audit function and provides independent assurance to the Audit Committee on the effectiveness of internal controls, risk management and governance. As the organisation’s third line of defence, the role ensures objective oversight, high‑quality audit delivery and clear insight that supports responsible stewardship and organisational performance.
Context of Opportunity / Main Accountabilities:
- Lead an effective internal audit function aligned to IIA and PSIAS standards, delivering high‑quality, risk‑based audit work
- Develop and deliver the annual internal audit plan based on key and emerging risks
- Oversee a co‑sourced internal audit provider, ensuring strong performance, value and quality
- Conduct a range of audit and advisory reviews across strategic, financial, operational, digital and transformation areas
- Maintain quality assurance, continuous improvement and disciplined follow‑up of audit actions
- Build trusted relationships with the Audit Committee and present at all quarterly meetings
- Produce clear, high‑quality reporting, including the annual internal audit report
- Meet regularly with the CEO (Accounting Officer) to provide updates and insight
- Coordinate with external assurance bodies, including the National Audit Office
- Provide practical recommendations to senior leaders to strengthen controls and reduce risk
- Work closely with second‑line teams to support a joined‑up assurance approach
- Offer independent advisory support on governance, risk and control matters
- Professionally qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
- Strong experience leading an internal audit function and delivering high‑quality audit work
- Deep understanding of internal controls and audit methodologies
- Experience engaging with Boards, Audit Committees and senior executives
- Ability to provide clear, practical recommendations and influence at senior levels
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to balance assurance with constructive challenge
- Experience in technology‑related assurance (e.g., cyber, information systems)
- Knowledge of governance and regulatory requirements
