Head of Technology, full time onsite

RSHP is an international architectural practice which has designed some of the world’s most iconic buildings. Our portfolio of projects ranges from the renowned Lloyd’s of London building, a new distillery and visitor centre for The Macallan in Speyside, to The Leadenhall Building, an office tower which is home to the practice’s studio. Currently, we are working on a range of high-profile projects, including 99 Bishopsgate, a new commercial tower in the City of London; the Four Seasons Hotel in Taipei; the British Library Extension in London; and Bayeux Tapestry Museum in Normandy.

The culture in the practice is one of sharing knowledge and coming together for discussion and teamwork. We have over 185 exceptional people from all over the world in our offices in London, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Australia and Paris who are working on projects in over 15 countries. 

The successful candidate will have a key role as a member of the leadership team being responsible for ensuring that all technology across RSHP operates as a cohesive, secure and efficient environment, rather than as a collection of disconnected systems.

This role provides strategic and operational leadership across Design Technology (BIM, Computation, Visualisation, Digital Fabrication), Information, Data and Knowledge Management, Business Operations systems, and emerging AI initiatives. It ensures that technology is modern with a view to the future of the industry, innovative, stable, well-governed, secure, fiscally responsible, and aligned with the long-term direction of the practice to support a developing digital transformation culture within the office.

We are looking for a candidate who can successfully lead the development and delivery of the organisation’s technology strategy, ensuring technology investments, platforms and services support business operational excellence and future growth of the practice.

Key Responsibilities

The role will provide practice-wide leadership and oversight of technology across Design Technology, Visualisation, Information Management, Knowledge Management, IT Operations, Business Operations Systems, Archives and AI-related initiatives.

You will lead the development and delivery of RSHP’s technology strategy, ensuring it is aligned with business objectives, operational priorities and future growth. This will include overseeing the development and management of the practice’s software and technology ecosystem, ensuring RSHP continues to adopt progressive tools while delivering core design services efficiently and cost-effectively.

You will be responsible for the central technology budget, including forecasting, investment planning, procurement and vendor management. You will ensure that major technology investments, contracts, platform changes and procurement decisions are appropriately reviewed, costed and aligned before commitment.

You will oversee IT Operations, ensuring infrastructure, cybersecurity controls and core business systems remain secure, resilient and appropriately maintained. You will also maintain governance oversight of digital design platforms and workflows, working closely with the Design (Project) Technology Lead and Computational Design Lead.

A key part of the role will be improving integration between core systems, including Deltek, Newforma, Axiell and other platforms, to strengthen data flow, connectivity and usability across the practice.

You will oversee and guide AI, automation and data initiatives, ensuring that emerging technologies are practical, secure and aligned with business and project needs. The role will also identify, manage and escalate significant technology, security and operational risks where there may be wider business impact.

As Chair of the Technology Strategy Board, you will provide leadership and structure around decision-making relating to technology priorities, investment, innovation and risk.

The role will also support the practice’s compliance with GDPR and wider data protection requirements, ensuring systems, data handling practices and third-party suppliers meet appropriate standards. You will maintain oversight of ISO 27001 compliance and promote best practice in information security, governance and risk management.

Externally, you will represent RSHP at relevant conferences, industry forums and symposia, helping to strengthen the practice’s profile within the technology and design community. You will also foster relationships with academic institutions, research partners and R&D organisations, identifying opportunities for collaboration, innovation and knowledge exchange.

Scope of Role

The role will be responsible for developing and proposing the technology budget for Board approval, maintaining oversight of investment across all technology-related functions and providing governance and strategic oversight of major platform changes and the adoption of new technologies.

You will also be responsible for escalating significant technology risks, compliance concerns and major capital commitments to the Technology Strategy Board.

Qualities and Skills required

• Senior technology leader with experience managing complex, multi-disciplinary environments
• Strong leadership capability, executing as appropriate in the areas of responsibility
• A good knowledge of design tools, research methods, data and data science technologies
• Experience in budget planning, financial management, and resource management
• Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies applicable to RSHP’s business needs
• Experience in IT operations, infrastructure, cybersecurity and enterprise systems
• Experience working across both operational IT and digital/project technology environments.
• Proven ability to manage long-term technology planning and vendors
• Good understanding of data governance and data protection principles (including GDPR).
• Strong communicator, able to translate technical concepts and risk into clear business language
• Collaborative, pragmatic and structured, with a focus on delivering practical outcomes
• Knowledge of collaboration and cloud technologies such as Azure, Autodesk ACC and Github
• Strong interest in R&D alongside representing the practice externally
