Junior Electronics Engineer

Harwell, England, United Kingdom Contract Posted 11 hours ago

Company Description At Mirico, we’re tackling one of the most urgent challenges of our time: methane emissions. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, and reducing emissions is one of the fastest ways to slow climate change. Our technology provides continuous, real-time monitoring of emissions from industrial sites - helping customers detect issues early and take action. We’re a growing, mission-driven company working with leading energy and industrial partners globally. Our systems are deployed in demanding environments around the world - so quality and reliability really matter.

Role Description We are seeking a motivated Junior Electronics Engineer to join our engineering team. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career engineer looking to develop practical skills in electronic instrumentation, test and measurement systems, and product development.

Initially, the successful candidate will focus on configuring, calibrating, testing, and validating new instruments prior to deployment. As experience and technical knowledge grow, the role will expand to include fault diagnosis and repair of electronic systems, as well as the independent delivery of small development and improvement projects.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience across the full engineering lifecycle while working alongside experienced engineers in a supportive environment.

Instrument Configuration and Testing

  • Configure, commission, and verify electronic instruments and systems.
  • Perform functional testing against specifications and documented procedures.
  • Carry out calibration and performance verification activities.
  • Record test results and maintain accurate technical documentation.
  • Support factory acceptance testing and customer-specific configurations.

Fault Finding and Technical Support

  • Diagnose faults in electronic assemblies and instrumentation.
  • Use laboratory test equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, and signal generators.
  • Investigate component-level and system-level issues.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective action activities.
  • Assist with repair, rework, and validation of equipment.

Development Projects

  • Design and implement small hardware, firmware, or test system improvements.
  • Produce schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
  • Develop and maintain test procedures and fixtures.
  • Participate in prototype assembly, testing, and evaluation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the engineering department.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Degree, HND, or equivalent qualification in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of analogue and digital electronic circuits.
  • Ability to interpret circuit schematics and technical drawings.
  • Familiarity with common laboratory test equipment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Linux and standard engineering software tools.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team.

Desirable

  • Experience gained through industrial placements, internships, university projects, or previous employment.
  • Knowledge of PCB design tools such as Altium, KiCad, or similar.
  • Basic programming experience in Python, C, or embedded systems development.
  • Understanding of communication protocols such as RS-232, RS-485, CAN, I²C, SPI, or Ethernet.
  • Experience with test automation or data acquisition systems.
  • Familiarity with quality systems and engineering documentation practices.

Personal Attributes

  • Curious and eager to learn new technologies.
  • Methodical and detail-oriented approach to work.
  • Strong practical hands-on skills.
  • Self-motivated and capable of managing small projects.
  • Willingness to take ownership of tasks and develop increasing levels of responsibility.

Career Development

  • This role is designed to provide a structured pathway from instrument configuration and testing through to fault diagnosis, product support, and independent engineering project work. Successful candidates will have opportunities to develop technical expertise, contribute to new product development, and progress towards Electronics Engineer or Development Engineer positions.
