Senior Software Engineer - Instrument

In 2024, we launched eProtein Discovery™ - a breakthrough protein expression, characterization, and purification platform, consisting of cloud-based software and a lab-based instrument (with proprietary cartridges and consumables). Since then, we have established a growing installed base in North America, Europe and Asia, receiving numerous awards and customer accolades.

As a key player in a small engineering team, you will support the next stage of Nuclera’s growth through:

• New Products - Contributing to development of a new product platform and its support tools.
• Installed Base Support - Sustaining and being the internal expert and primary point of contact for manufacturing and field support issues relating to current generation Instrument.

Over time (6-12 months), your skills and responsibilities will broaden to include other software languages and technologies. This may also extend to electronics and PCB design.

About the role

Software Development

• Full lifecycle development and release management for prototypes, products and support tools.

Project Management

• Planning: Providing plans covering tasks, dependencies, effort, cost and resource allocation.
• Risk Management: Supporting risk identification, evaluation and choice of risk response strategies.
• Execution & Self-Monitoring: Progress according to agreed priorities and plans. Devise appropriate responses to problems and issues. Track and report own progress (deliverables, adherence to schedules, actual spend vs budget, etc.)

Requirements

Essential:

• Bachelors’ Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or similar.
• 5+ years of full lifecycle development for multi-technology products developed to rigorous standards. Life science equipment / medical device equipment experience desired.
• Programming Languages: C for STM32 and Raspberry Pi Pico 2, python 3, Bash
• Operating Systems / Frameworks: Embedded Linux / Yocto, Docker
• Development Environment: Git / Gitlab / CI/CD, Jira
• Software Quality: coding standards/static analysis, code/design review, testing - unit, integration, hardware-in-the-loop
• Technologies: real-time control & monitoring (motion / mechanism functions & temperature control) embedded systems / electronics, LAN networking
• Strong initiative, problem-solving, task prioritization, and end-to-end execution / completion.
• Effective relationship management, cross-functional teamwork, clear documentation, and presentation skills.
• Current UK driving licence. Willing and able to occasionally travel nationally / internationally on business as required.

• Operating Systems / Frameworks: Torizon, PyQt 6, RTOS
• Development Environment: VS Code, Claude AI

• Technologies: Microfluidics, Optics / Image Processing, Machine Learning / Neural Networks, Cybersecurity, PCB Design (Altium), GUI Design
