Sister/Charge Nurse/Senior ODP
Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Registered Nurse or Senior Operating Department Practitioner (SODP) to join our evolving Anaesthetics and Recovery Team as a Band 6 Anaesthetic and Recovery Practitioner. As part of an innovative workforce transformation, Anaesthetic and Recovery services are coming together to create a fully integrated perioperative team.
Historically separate roles, all newly appointed practitioners will now work across both Anaesthetics and Recovery, providing seamless patient care throughout the perioperative journey. This rotational model has been developed to ensure a flexible, highly skilled workforce capable of delivering safe, high-quality care across both clinical environments.
The successful candidate will be an experienced practitioner with the clinical expertise, leadership skills and enthusiasm to help shape this new way of working. Working alongside the Band 7 leadership team, the post holder will act as a role model, supporting the development of staff undertaking the dual-role pathway and helping new team members gain confidence and competence in both Anaesthetic and Recovery practice.
The role combines advanced clinical practice with leadership responsibilities, including supervision of staff, supporting preceptorship and competency programmes, facilitating learning opportunities, and promoting a positive team culture during this exciting period of change.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide expert perioperative care, assisting with anaesthesia, airway management and patient monitoring, while also delivering high-quality post-anaesthetic recovery care to a diverse patient population across multiple surgical specialties.
This position offers a unique opportunity to influence the future of perioperative services, helping to establish a skilled and resilient workforce while ensuring patients receive outstanding care from admission to recovery. Candidates should be passionate about education, service improvement, and developing others, with a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and clinical practice.
For the initial 12 to 18 months, this role will primarily involve working Monday to Friday, with a reduced requirement to participate in weekend, night, and on-call duties. This arrangement is intended to support the implementation and development of a significant service change within the department.
Following successful implementation of the service change, it is expected that the post holder will transition to the standard Band 6 rota and work alongside other Band 6 practitioners, undertaking an equitable share of shift work, including nights, weekends, and on-call commitments, in line with service requirements.
This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced practitioner who is enthusiastic about leadership, education and developing a modern, integrated Anaesthetic and Recovery workforce.
