Key accountabilities

US Expansion Senior Associate

As a US Expansion Senior Associate, you will support UK businesses and their founders as they expand into the United States. Working closely with Managers, Directors and Partners, you will prepare US tax compliance filings, assist with advisory projects, and build the technical and commercial skills required to become a trusted adviser to clients navigating the complexities of US expansion.

The role involves

• Continuing to develop a strong technical understanding of US and UK tax issues affecting businesses expanding into the US market, including federal and state tax considerations, permanent establishment risk, nexus exposure, and cross-border structuring.
• Managing the preparation of US tax returns and related compliance filings from information provided by clients, while taking ownership of your workload and meeting filing deadlines.
• Reviewing client financial information and tax positions, identifying potential issues, and clearly explaining the drivers behind tax liabilities, refunds, or filing positions to reviewers and managers.
• Supporting clients in managing double taxation risks through the correct application of sourcing rules, treaty provisions, foreign tax credits, and other cross-border relief mechanisms.
• Developing an understanding of the tax consequences of US and non-US entity ownership structures, including identifying filing obligations, reporting requirements, and potential tax exposures.
• Building relationships with clients through regular communication, information gathering, status updates and participation in client meetings alongside senior team members.
• Identifying missing information, recognising potential tax issues and escalation points, and proactively bringing matters to the attention of Managers and Partners.
• Undertaking first-level reviews of straightforward tax returns and supporting the training and development of junior team members where appropriate.
• Performing robust self-review procedures to ensure returns are technically accurate, internally consistent and supported by appropriate documentation before submission for review.
• Contributing to the continued development of the US Expansion service line through technical training, process improvements, knowledge sharing and participation in internal initiatives.

Ideal Candidate

• Progressing towards or holding EA, ATT, ADIT, CPA or an equivalent professional qualification.
• Experience preparing US tax returns and working with cross-border US/UK tax matters.
• Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• An interest in supporting entrepreneurial and fast-growing businesses expanding internationally.
• A desire to develop both technical expertise and client relationship management skills within a growing specialist team.
