Automotive Engineering Trainer Assessor
37 Hours per Week | All Year Round | Permanent
You know what good automotive work looks like. Help the next generation build the skills to do it.
Automotive apprentices learn by doing the job. They need someone who understands what competent work looks like, can recognise where their skills are developing and knows how to help them take the next step.
As our Automotive Engineering Trainer Assessor, you’ll work with apprentices and employers across Vehicle Maintenance and Automotive Engineering, assessing practical competence, giving clear technical feedback and helping apprentices build the skills, knowledge and professional behaviours they need to succeed.
You’ll spend much of your time in real workplace environments, observing practical activity, reviewing evidence and working with employers to create meaningful opportunities for apprentices to demonstrate their competence.
We’re looking for genuine automotive industry credibility. You’ll understand diagnostics, maintenance and repair and be comfortable with the technologies shaping modern vehicles, including hybrid and electric systems.
You may already be working in training or assessment, or you may be an experienced automotive professional who has spent years supporting apprentices and colleagues and is ready to use that experience in a different way.
- Assess Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Maintenance apprentices in the workplace.
- Observe practical activity and make clear, evidence-based assessment decisions.
- Review portfolios and assess underpinning knowledge through questioning and professional discussion.
- Coach apprentices and give feedback that helps them improve.
- Work with employers to create appropriate workplace assessment opportunities.
- Maintain accurate assessment and e-portfolio records.
- Contribute technical and assessment information to apprentice progress reviews.
- Support apprentices to build the competence required for timely completion and Gateway.
- Take part in standardisation and quality assurance activity.
- Keep your automotive and assessment knowledge current.
- A Level 3 qualification or above in Automotive Engineering, Vehicle Maintenance or a related discipline.
- Significant automotive industry experience.
- Strong practical experience of diagnostics, maintenance and repair.
- Current knowledge of hybrid and electric vehicle technology.
- Experience supporting apprentices, trainees or colleagues to develop their skills.
- Strong coaching, communication and organisational skills.
- Confidence managing a caseload and maintaining accurate digital records.
- An assessor qualification, or willingness to work towards one.
- Previous assessment or apprenticeship experience, manufacturer accreditation, Master Technician status or an IQA qualification would all be useful, but they are not the only route into the role.
What you’re like
- Technically credible. You know what good automotive practice looks like because you’ve done it.
- Supportive. You help apprentices improve without lowering the standard.
- Fair and consistent. Your assessment decisions are based on evidence.
- Observant. You notice the detail in practical performance.
- Organised. You keep apprentices, assessments and evidence moving.
- Employer-aware. You understand how apprenticeship development needs to work around a real workplace.
- Clear. You explain technical requirements and feedback simply.
- Professionally current. You stay connected to changes in automotive technology.
Essentials
- You’ll need an enhanced DBS check. If you get the job, we’ll do this for you.
- You’re committed to safeguarding and inclusion.
- You can travel to employer premises and College locations.
- You’re willing to maintain the occupational and assessor competence required for the role.
Automotive technology is changing quickly.
Diagnostics are becoming more sophisticated; hybrid and electric vehicles are increasingly part of everyday workshop practice and employers need technicians who can work confidently and safely with modern vehicles.
Your experience gives you something valuable to pass on.
At Wigan & Leigh College, you’ll use that experience to help apprentices turn workplace learning into recognised competence. You’ll work with employers, apprentices and College colleagues, stay connected to industry and see people develop from learners into capable automotive professionals.
And if you have the industry expertise but not yet the assessor qualification, that doesn’t necessarily rule you out. We can support the right person to develop their assessment practice and work towards the qualification required for the role.
