Chief Executive

c. £105k, 4 days per week

We started 38 Degrees because lots of people all over the UK – including us – wanted Britain to be fairer - where everyone gets a fair chance in life and it’s not ‘one rule for them’, and another for the rest of us. More respectful - where we focus on what we have in common with one another, rather than what divides us. And more sustainable - where we hold big companies and our government to account for their role in saving our planet.

The truth is that if we want that change to happen, we have to come together and demand it ourselves, day by day.

Nearly 18 years on, 38 Degrees is now a community of more than a million people who together take small actions on issues they care about, which add up to something bigger – a movement for a better Britain for everyone who calls our country home.

In the last 18 months we’ve campaigned alongside a former Prime Minister on child poverty, Hacked Off on media regulation, Hope not Hate on workers’ rights, Surfers Against Sewage on the Water Bill, and many smaller organisations and individuals fighting hard for what is right.

With some of the world’s most powerful campaigning technology, a creative and dedicated staff team and a powerful movement to change lives, communities and our country, the millions of us who take small actions can each get on with our busy lives, while having an impact far greater than we could achieve alone.

If, like us, you think that politics is fundamental to a flourishing society, then you probably agree that democracy isn’t democracy unless people can campaign. 38 Degrees brings people’s real voices into the debate, through the medium of the extraordinary technology that’s now available to us.

Matthew McGregor, our CEO for five years (until moving to a role in Downing Street this summer), led our movement to deliver what 38 Degrees does best: we made the powerful pay attention, and we helped make life in communities up and down the UK just a little bit better. His successor will be someone with a rare set of skills and experience, who’s ready to step up and play their part in one of the most significant movements of our time.

So our new Chief Executive will join us at a very exciting time for 38 Degrees. Candidates must understand not only the current modes of digital communication, but also new and emerging techniques and technologies, including AI tools. You'll also bring a full organisational portfolio: incisive strategic thinking, leadership of change, and setting a clear vision that brings passionate, expert teams with you.

A sophisticated and extensive understanding of politics and campaigning, supplemented with an astute commercial approach to income generation in its widest definition, are both essential. Adept at building strong cultures, in which people feel fulfilled and rewarded, you’ll understand how to have sometimes complex conversations, and will be confident in embodying the values and mission of the organisation.
