Deputy News Editor
The Role
The Gazette is looking for a Deputy News Editor with the reporting ambition, contacts and judgement to deliver exclusive news for a demanding professional readership.
Editorially independent and published by the Law Society, the Gazette combines specialist reporting with the scope of a national news beat, covering courts and justice, major law firms, regulation and the business of law. This is a journalism role, not a communications post. Independent scrutiny, accuracy and fair reporting are central to what we do.
You'll generate original stories for our website, daily newsletter and weekly edition, developing sources and expertise while pursuing news beyond your assigned beat. There will also be opportunities to write features, comment and diary items, and contribute to our podcasts.
Working closely with the News Editor, you'll help keep our coverage sharp, timely and legally sound. When required, you'll assign stories, assess and edit copy, and make informed decisions about reporting risks and readers' comments.
This is a hybrid role, with more regular office attendance expected during the initial period.
What we're looking for
You'll bring significant reporting experience from a national newspaper, leading business publication, wire service or specialist news title.
A proven ability to generate agenda-setting exclusives is essential, along with the ability to develop contacts and turn specialist subjects into clear, compelling news.
Strong editorial judgement and a sound understanding of media law and editorial compliance are key, as is the confidence to defend independent reporting respectfully and effectively.
Comfortable with digital-first publishing and collaborative working, you'll thrive under tight deadlines. The role also involves occasional evening and weekend work, as well as travel when required.
What's in it for you
This is an excellent opportunity to join a progressive membership organisation and work alongside leading thinkers in the legal sector. You'll join a strong and respected brand, known for its legal expertise and commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, with a culture built on trust, clarity, excellence and respect.
We offer hybrid working, a generous flexible benefits package, a friendly working environment and opportunities to develop your career within a professional organisation.
Please note: if you are an internal applicant, Pay Policy will apply.
