Design Engineer
UX/UI Engineer (Design Engineer) – Junior / Mid / Senior
Location: London, UK
Work Mode: Hybrid – 3 days onsite per week
Contract Duration: 6 months (subject to confirmation)
Open Positions: 3 (Junior, Mid and Senior)
Business Area: Client Connectivity – Global Payments Solution Technology
About the Role
We are looking for talented UX/UI Engineers (Design Engineers) across Junior, Mid and Senior levels to join a technology team supporting Global Payments Solutions.
This is a hands-on engineering role combining UI/visual design judgement with front-end development expertise. The successful candidates will design intuitive, accessible and responsive user interfaces and implement them directly in production code.
This is not a traditional UX/UI design or Figma hand-off role. Candidates must be comfortable writing production-quality code using semantic HTML, modern CSS, vanilla JavaScript and Web Components.
You will work within a collaborative delivery team of approximately 4–6 members, including a dedicated Product Owner, delivering frequent improvements through a continuous-flow development approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop accessible, responsive and user-friendly interfaces using semantic HTML, CSS, vanilla JavaScript and Web Components.
- Translate business requirements into actionable UI development tasks and deliver production-ready features.
- Apply strong UI/visual design judgement across layouts, visual hierarchy, interactions and usability.
- Build reusable UI components and contribute to shared component libraries, design patterns and technical documentation.
- Implement accessibility best practices, including WCAG principles, ARIA attributes, keyboard navigation and focus management.
- Integrate RESTful APIs and manage authentication, loading, error, empty and other edge-case states.
- Ensure cross-browser compatibility, responsive behaviour and maintainable front-end code.
- Participate in pair programming, code reviews, technical discussions and knowledge sharing.
- Identify and resolve UI defects, accessibility issues and technical debt.
- Contribute to production support, continuous improvement and iterative feature delivery.
- Support coaching and mentoring activities according to seniority.
Essential Technical Skills
- Strong hands-on experience with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript (ES6+).
- Practical development experience using vanilla JavaScript and Web Components.
- Strong understanding of semantic HTML, responsive design and cross-browser compatibility.
- Practical knowledge of web accessibility, including keyboard accessibility, focus management, semantic structure, ARIA and WCAG principles.
- Ability to design and implement usable interfaces with appropriate visual hierarchy and interaction patterns.
- Experience integrating REST APIs into front-end applications.
- Understanding of UI states, including loading, authentication, errors and empty states.
- Experience developing maintainable, reusable and production-ready UI components.
- Strong collaboration, problem-solving and communication skills.
