Design Verification Engineer

Licensed sponsor Cambridge Full-time Posted 1 hour ago

A design verification engineer working as part of multidisciplinary teams on complex technical projects. The role plans, develops and executes testing programmes on a range of products for our clients. It involves leading testing workstreams and working closely with other workstream leads and project managers. The aim is to ensure the products we develop are tested rigorously in line with product requirements, regulations and industry best practice so that our clients can successfully file and commercialise their products.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Project Delivery and Technical Leadership

  • Plan and develop testing programmes, participate in testing, interpret results and follow through on failures and design changes.
  • Understand the requirements for a product, identify required standards and regulations and incorporate them into the testing programme.
  • Plan and conduct testing in line with CDP processes and the QMS.
  • Design and develop test rigs and fixtures as required for the test methods.
  • Plan and execute equipment qualification and test method validation activities, using a pragmatic and risk-based approach.
  • Apply statistical techniques to testing programmes, primarily to define sample sizes and support test method validation, with complete rationales and justifications.
  • Maintain clear evidence that the product meets its requirements through traceability documentation, and support design handover and transfer with the necessary technical information.
  • Lead and deliver client projects and programmes as Project Lead or Technical Lead as appropriate.
  • Build trusted client relationships and act as a point of contact during project delivery.

Working with Clients and Project Teams

  • Act as a technical point of contact, giving project teams a clear view of the test plans and the implications of technical decisions.
  • Explain technical options, trade-offs and recommendations clearly to clients and colleagues, using the right level of detail for the audience.
  • Work with project managers and other technical leads to plan testing activities, estimate effort and manage technical dependencies and priorities.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and external partners to agree specifications, resolve interface issues, conduct external testing and integrate their work and results into the overall test plan.
  • Translate complex and potentially ambiguous RFPs into pragmatic technical activities with clear outcomes and trade-offs.

Requirements

Skills and Attributes

At least five years' experience testing products in a highly regulated industry, preferably medical devices.

  • Delivery-oriented and pragmatic, balancing quality, risk, cost and client outcomes.
  • Evidence-led and data-driven, using insight to inform decision-making and prioritisation.
  • Quality-focused, with a commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence.
  • Experience with ISO 13485 and with FDA and EU MDR requirements.
  • Hands-on and practical engineering skills, willing and able to get stuck into designing solutions and able to demonstrate a passion for engineering.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the curiosity and judgement to challenge assumptions and work through unfamiliar technical problems.
  • Pragmatic and organised, able to bring structure to an ambiguous brief without creating unnecessary complexity or paperwork.
  • Confident working across disciplines, with technical strengths in mechanical and electrical engineering or mechatronics.
  • A clear communicator who can build strong relationships with clients, explain technical issues and influence decisions constructively.
  • Proactive, collaborative and accountable, with the drive to take ownership and see technical issues through to completion.
  • Practical experience defining testing requirements, developing test plans and managing interfaces between engineering disciplines.
  • Experience planning and carrying out system-level tests, assessing performance against requirements and documenting engineering findings.

Education and Experience

  • Career experience in pharmaceutical or medical device development, ideally having played a significant role in the launch of a combination product or medical device.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical, mechanical, mechatronic or systems engineering, or a closely related engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience defining and standardising methodologies or processes.
  • Confidence engaging with clients and stakeholders.
