LC MS Analyst - PFAS
Join Tetra Tech as an LC–MS/MS PFAS Analyst
Advance environmental analysis and support critical decisions on emerging contaminants through high quality, ultra-trace PFAS testing.
Purpose and Scope of the Role
This permanent, full-time role is based in Tetra Tech’s Bedford analytical laboratory, a UKAS-accredited facility with over 100 scientists and support staff. The laboratory delivers large-scale monitoring programmes and client projects across water, utilities, agrochemicals and defence.
Working Monday to Friday, 14:00–22:00, you will operate LC–MS/MS methods for PFAS analysis, from sample extraction through to data processing and reporting. Your work will support routine compliance testing, multi-site monitoring campaigns and method development for emerging contaminants. You will use laboratory instrumentation and workflows designed to measure ultra-trace concentrations and generate reliable data for regulatory and client decision-making.
Your Impact in this Position
In the short term, you will deliver high-quality LC–MS/MS PFAS analyses, maintain instrument uptime and ensure data is produced accurately and on schedule.
Over the medium term, you will contribute to method optimisation, troubleshooting and workflow improvements, helping to increase throughput, robustness and detection capability.
In the longer term, you can support or lead method development for novel and priority contaminants, progress towards senior analyst or technical lead roles, and help shape the continued expansion of Tetra Tech’s specialist analytical capability.
Core Capabilities
Technical LC–MS/MS Proficiency
- Proven operation of single and triple quadrupole LC–MS systems, including ESI/APCI techniques, routine maintenance, performance checks and first-line troubleshooting.
PFAS Analytical Method Execution
- Competence in sample preparation techniques such as LLE, SPE and QuEChERS, with experience applying trace organic workflows and following SOPs and QC protocols.
Data Interpretation and Reporting
- Accurate processing of chromatographic and mass spectral data, including QC review, result validation and clear reporting for client-facing deliverables.
Problem Solving and Method Development
- Experience supporting the development, optimisation or troubleshooting of methods for PFAS, emerging contaminants or other priority pollutants in response to technical or regulatory needs.
Operational Collaboration
- Ability to work closely with extraction teams, technicians, analysts and project teams to meet throughput requirements, quality standards and reporting deadlines.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
You will have a BSc 2:1 in Chemistry or a related subject, or equivalent industrial experience, along with experience in an accredited environmental analytical laboratory. Strong attention to detail, effective time management and a quality-focused approach are essential.
Experience with Agilent ChemStation or MassHunter, PFAS analysis, ultra-trace methods, additional analytical training or relevant certification would be advantageous.
Work Patterns and Location
This role is based on site at the Bedford laboratory. Core working hours are Monday to Friday, 14:00–22:00. Due to the laboratory-based nature of the position, regular on-site working is expected. #LI-SY1 #Laboratories
