Company Description
Calla Lily Clinical Care is a British clinical-stage medical device startup developing Callavid®, a leak-free, convenient and dosage-confident delivery platform for vaginally delivered drugs. The company initially focuses on progesterone delivery for threatened miscarriage and IVF, addressing an unmet need for patient-friendly drug administration during stressful fertility journeys. Calla Lily Clinical Care is also advancing Callavid® for locally delivered antibiotics to enable lower doses, reduced systemic exposure and less disruption to the microbiome, supported by a Wellcome Leap award. The company is a Certified B Corporation.
Role Description
We’re looking for an engineering graduate to join our team on a 6-month internship, with the possibility of extension. The role is based at our office on Finchley Road, London, with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office, and starts on Monday 30 November 2026. You’ll focus on design verification of Callavid®, designing and 3D printing jigs and fixtures, and supporting our Engineering Change Requests (ECRs). You’ll also help with sample manufacturing for a clinical trial production run. It’s a hands-on role where you’ll gain real experience of medical device design controls within a quality management system.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the planning and execution of design verification activities: draft test protocols, carry out testing, record raw data and write test reports
- Help maintain traceability between user requirements, technical requirements and verification tests
- Analyse test data against acceptance criteria, and record and support the investigation of deviations
- Design jigs and fixtures in SolidWorks for test manufacturing, assembly and verification testing, and produce them in-house on our 3D printers
- Iterate designs quickly based on testing and feedback, and design and print other parts such as prototype components and workstation aids
- Update affected drawings, specifications, BOMs and procedures, maintain the ECR log and follow up on actions
- Support updates to risk management documentation (dFMEA / PFMEA)
- Maintain manual workstations, the 3D printer, air compressor and Mecmesin test equipment (training provided)
- Support hands-on sample manufacturing for a clinical trial production run
- Keep technical documents accurate and version-controlled in line with Good Documentation Practice
Essential Qualifications
- Completed Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, Manufacturing or Design Engineering, or a related discipline
- Very high attention to detail and a methodical approach to testing and documentation
- Clear and accurate technical writing skills
- Working knowledge of 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel for data analysis
Desirable
- Experience in a regulated environment such as medical devices or pharmaceuticals
- Awareness of design controls and standards such as ISO 13485 and ISO 14971
- Hands-on experience designing parts for 3D printing, ideally on Formlabs printers
- Experience with visual / optical measurement systems (e.g. Keyence)
- Bench testing experience with force testing equipment (e.g. Mecmesin)
- Familiarity with Gage R&R studies and GD&T
- Able to learn on the go, with an understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes
What We Offer
- Hands-on experience across the development of a drug-device combination product in a small, fast-moving team
- Mentoring from experienced engineers and exposure to design verification, change control and quality systems
- The opportunity to extend the internship beyond the initial 6 months
