Public Health Disease Prevention Nurse
Overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join Harrow Council’s Public Health team as a Public Health Disease Prevention Nurse, playing a key role in improving the health and wellbeing of residents across the borough.
This role is ideally suited to a candidate with experience of community work like a district nurse, health visitor, school nurse, nurse for safeguarding who is looking for an exciting new challenge. This is a new role that you can shape and make your own. You will have a high degree of autonomy and the chance to have a life-changing impact on thousands of patients in Harrow. We carry out up to 8,000 NHS Health Checks a year.
Focussed on working through others, influencing, training and sharing best practice rather than direct patient care, you will support the development of skills, confidence and capacity within primary care to ensure Harrow patients receive a high quality NHS Health Check and lifestyle advice.
Through this work, you will help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, prevent long-term conditions and encourage healthier lifestyles across Harrow’s communities. While the role has a significant focus on NHS Health Checks, you will be a key link between public health, the Borough Based Partnership and adult social care and our partners in primary care on a range of topics and will get involved in a number of projects and initiatives.
The role will bring together all your skills as a nurse, a trainer, a diplomat, a strategic thinker and influencer, a leader, a practice assessor, a clinician and teacher.
A typical day might include visiting a couple of the 31 GP practices in the borough, getting to know the staff, observing an NHS Health Check and any resolving problems and queries that you find. You will act as an important bridge between the local authority and primary care, feeding back common issues and opportunities identified through conversations with practices and helping to develop borough-wide approaches where appropriate.
As a specialist public health resource, you will lead the development, delivery and evaluation of evidence-based training, education and quality improvement initiatives. By using data, research and best practice, you will help drive improvements in service delivery, address health inequalities and ensure that programmes meet the diverse needs of Harrow’s population.
This rewarding role offers the opportunity to influence positive change across the local health and care system and make a lasting impact on population health. You will work collaboratively with a wide range of partners to promote culturally competent, compassionate and evidence-based approaches to behaviour change and disease prevention. Harrow Council is committed to continuous improvement, professional development and delivering excellent services, making this an ideal opportunity for an experienced and motivated nurse who is passionate about prevention, partnership working and improving health outcomes for local residents.
We are committed to supporting your professional development. The successful candidate will benefit from regular professional supervision from an experienced nurse, access to ongoing learning opportunities, and support to maintain professional standards and practice.
In addition, applicants who are existing NHS Pension Scheme members will be able to retain membership of the Scheme if they wish, subject to NHS Pension Scheme eligibility requirements.
Provisional Interview date: Friday 20th November 2026. Interviews will be in person at Harrow Council Hub, Forward Drive, Harrow, HA3 8FL.
