Research Entomologist in Chemical Ecology
On the 1 August 2026, the University of Greenwich and the University of Kent formed a pioneering new multi-university group called London and South-East (LASE) University Group.
Should you join us, you will be employed by LASE but will work as part of the University of Greenwich academic division, contributing to its distinct strengths, community and identity while also being part of a wider group that brings together the scale, resilience and shared ambition of both universities.
Through LASE we aim to deliver outstanding education, impactful research, and meaningful regional and global impact.
The Natural Resources Institute is a specialist research, knowledge exchange and postgraduate training unit based at the University of Greenwich’s Medway Campus. We aspire to be a global leader in collaborative research, knowledge exchange and learning to co-create a just, healthy, and sustainable future for all. We do this through transforming lives through research, innovation, and learning.
The NRI has an international footprint and is home to over 80 international scientists and social scientists. We have made award-winning discoveries collaborating with partners across sectors and disciplines to co-create environmental resilience, sustainable agriculture, health, and food security. NRI works towards a just world free from disease, hunger, poverty, and violence. We are an inclusive, collaborative, and flexible research and learning institute.
The Institute has a strong history of innovative research to address global challenges related to agriculture and food security. The unique diversity of disciplines across NRI’s three departments provides opportunities for transdisciplinary and systems research relevant to tackling the complexity of contemporary and emerging global agriculture, biodiversity, food security, food system and one-health challenges.
An opportunity has arisen for a research entomologist to join the Agriculture, Health and Environment department. The successful applicant will carry out behavioural bioassays and electrophysiological assays on arthropods as part of our work on beneficial insects and sustainable control of pests and diseases of crops, livestock, and people.
The post-holder’s responsibilities will include carrying out bioassays with terrestrial arthropods to measure responses to chemical and other stimuli. This will include electrophysiological assays (electroantennography, single sensillum recording) and behavioural bioassays in olfactometers and wind tunnels. The post-holder will have the opportunity to use apparatus for automated 2D- and 3D- tracking of insect behaviour. They will also be expected to work with the technical team to maintain colonies of arthropods in our insectaries and to conduct field work in the UK and for short periods abroad.
The post-holder will be expected to contribute to the preparation of research outputs including published papers, and applications for future funding to continue research. There will be opportunities for the post-holder to undertake teaching at postgraduate and undergraduate level. Candidates must have a good theoretical and practical background in behavioural entomology or arthropod chemical ecology as demonstrated through a relevant PhD. Specific training in use of bioassay equipment will be provided.
