Why Mitie?
At Mitie, our purpose is simple: we create exceptional places and services that help our customers be exceptional every day.
Joining our Projects business means becoming part of a collaborative, ambitious and highly respected team delivering projects that genuinely matter. From supporting the UK's transition to renewable energy to improving and expanding critical infrastructure, your work will have a tangible impact.
You'll benefit from
- Exposure to high-profile and complex infrastructure projects
- A supportive team of experienced construction and projects lawyers
- Significant autonomy and responsibility from day one
- Career development and learning opportunities within a growing business
- Flexible working arrangements and a people-focused culture
- The opportunity to influence business decisions at the highest level
The Role
This is a broad and varied in-house legal position with a strong focus on construction, engineering and energy infrastructure projects.
You will act as the lead legal adviser on major projects across Mitie's Power & Grid businesses, supporting the entire project lifecycle from bid stage through to delivery, completion and dispute resolution.
Working closely with commercial, operational, finance and leadership teams, you will provide pragmatic, solution-focused advice that balances legal risk with commercial objectives.
Key areas of responsibility include
- Advising on and negotiating a wide range of engineering, infrastructure and construction contracts, including NEC, FIDIC, IChemE and MF/1 forms
- Supporting major energy infrastructure projects such as high-voltage substations, transmission and distribution networks, battery energy storage systems (BESS), renewable energy developments, grid connections and private network infrastructure
- Leading legal support for bids, tenders and contract negotiations, helping stakeholders understand and manage contractual risk
- Advising on contract performance, variations, termination issues, payment disputes and claims
- Managing dispute avoidance and early-stage dispute resolution strategies
- Developing legal guidance, contract templates and training programmes to improve risk management across the business
- Building strong relationships with senior stakeholders and becoming a trusted commercial partner
- Managing external legal advisers and ensuring cost-effective, commercially focused support
About You
We are looking for a commercially minded lawyer who enjoys working closely with the business and influencing outcomes.
You will be a qualified Solicitor with substantial experience advising on construction, engineering or infrastructure projects, either in-house or in private practice.
You will bring
- Strong experience drafting, negotiating and advising on complex construction, engineering or commercial contracts
- A solid understanding of standard form contracts such as NEC and/or FIDIC
- Excellent commercial judgement and a pragmatic, solutions-focused approach
- The ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly and confidently to senior stakeholders
- Experience managing legal aspects of major projects and supporting business-critical decision making
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
Experience within the renewable energy, power, utilities or wider infrastructure sectors would be highly advantageous. However, we are equally interested in candidates with a strong construction and projects background who are keen to deepen their expertise in the rapidly evolving energy sector.
Location
We are open to candidates located within reasonable commuting distance of London, Birmingham, Manchester or Glasgow.
This is a flexible role with hybrid working arrangements. Occasional travel across the UK will be required to support project teams, attend negotiations and build relationships with key stakeholders. Candidates based outside London should expect periodic travel to our London offices.
