Join our Lighting team and play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality technical advice across diverse sectors, influencing the design and assessment of environments and sustainable energy developments.

Purpose & Scope of the Role

As a Principal / Associate Lighting Consultant, you’ll lead and deliver complex lighting consultancy projects across residential, healthcare, education, retail and commercial developments, as well as renewable energy schemes, including solar farms and battery storage.

You’ll provide specialist expertise in lighting assessments, daylight, sunlight and overshadowing, glint and glare, lighting design reviews and mitigation strategies. You’ll also contribute to environmental statements, planning submissions and the discharge of planning conditions, ensuring robust, evidence-based advice that meets regulatory requirements and client needs.

Your Impact in this position

You’ll combine technical leadership with commercial insight to deliver successful projects, strengthen client relationships and support the continued growth of the Noise, Air Quality, Lighting and Odour (NALO) team. You’ll mentor developing talent, drive business development and represent the team with confidence, including providing expert witness evidence at public inquiries, hearings and legal proceedings.

Core Capabilities

  • Technical Excellence: Apply your consultancy expertise and knowledge of relevant legislation, policy and guidance to deliver robust assessments and practical mitigation. Use tools such as DIALux Evo, AutoCAD, SketchUp, MBS Waldram Tools and Forge Solar, alongside lighting survey equipment.
  • Project Leadership: Drive complex projects from inception to completion, managing resources, procurement, budgets, invoicing, costs, quality and deadlines.
  • Commercial & Business Development: Develop compelling fee proposals and tenders, identify opportunities, build networks and cultivate lasting client relationships.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Translate complex technical findings into clear, persuasive reports and advice. Confidently present evidence and engage with clients, stakeholders and decision-makers.
  • Team Development & Safety: Support team growth through mentoring and training, while promoting health, safety and security, and fostering a proactive, collaborative working culture.

Training, Qualifications & Experience

You’ll bring substantial lighting consultancy experience, a strong academic background and membership of the Institution of Lighting Professionals. Expert witness experience, commercial acumen, project management skills and a proven track record in technical reporting and business development are highly desirable. A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel are required.

Working Environment

You’ll work across a varied portfolio of projects, combining office-based collaboration, site visits and client meetings. Office attendance, locations and working patterns—including hybrid, remote and flexible arrangements—should be confirmed for the role, alongside travel expectations.
