- We are looking for aSenior Software Engineer to join the IT Team.
The Software Engineering team is part of PureGym’s Software Engineering function, with a clear purpose: delivering, running, and optimising the web and app products that acquire and retain members at every PureGym. We’re hyper-focused on five key business outcomes: converting visitors to members, retaining and winning back subscribers, expanding rapidly into new markets, driving acquisition traffic, and supporting PureGym’s low-cost, self-service model.
We work in self-organising, cross-functional delivery squads with engineers, QA, and delivery operating as one unit. Engineers are line-managed by Software Engineering Managers who sit across the squads, creating consistency of standards, development, and ways of working across the function. We’re AI-first, experience-heavy, and deeply committed to raising the bar on engineering craft, delivery quality, and the development of our people.
The Role
The purpose of this role is to be a strong, independently operating engineer within a self-organising delivery squad, delivering complex features to a consistently high standard and developing the technical voice, breadth of contribution, and growing influence that define an engineer who is becoming more than just an excellent individual contributor.
PureGym’s digital platforms power millions of member interactions and are evolving at pace. As Senior Software Engineer, you are an experienced, independently capable contributor in your squad. You take on the most complex stories and features in your area, you own them from design through to production, and you consistently deliver to a high standard without needing close direction.
You have a clear technical voice. You contribute to design and architecture discussions with confidence, ask the questions that matter, and challenge approaches when you think there is a better way. You don’t yet carry accountability for the squad’s overall technical direction, but your views are well-reasoned and worth having.
You take quality seriously. You write testable code, contribute to test automation alongside QA, and treat acceptance criteria as something to be understood and challenged before development begins, not just ticked off. You understand that clean, reliable software is a discipline, not a byproduct.
You are building an agentic-first way of working. You use AI tooling to accelerate your own delivery, you’re beginning to design repeatable workflows that tackle features end-to-end, and you’re sharing what you learn with the people around you. You measure your output in value delivered, not effort expended.
You’ll be responsible for
- Delivering complex features and technical work independently to a consistently high standard, taking full ownership from design through to production without requiring direction on what to do next
- Contributing to design and architecture discussions with a growing technical voice: asking the right questions, challenging approaches constructively, and backing your views with reasoning
- Participating as an engaged squad member when the team accepts an initiative: raising questions, surfacing technical concerns, and helping the team understand what it’s committing to before work begins
- Producing constructive, quality-focused code reviews that raise the standard of work entering the codebase and give the recipient something useful to act on
- Supporting less experienced engineers in the squad through pairing and informal guidance, sharing your knowledge and helping them grow
- Using agentic tooling as a default for your own delivery: designing workflows that take features from intent to production, and sharing effective patterns with the team as you find them
- Writing testable code and contributing to test automation alongside QA engineers in the squad, treating quality as a shared discipline rather than a handover
- Pulling work right: prioritising getting in-progress work to done over picking up new work, and stepping into testing, deployment, or verification when that is what the team needs to keep flow moving; done means deployed and verified, not code-complete
- Contributing your perspective on technical debt in your area: naming it clearly and making the case for addressing it rather than working around it
- Participating in chapters and developing your cross-team voice and knowledge-sharing contribution
The Person
You are a strong engineer who works independently and produces consistently high-quality work. You don’t need to be pointed at the next thing; you understand the team’s priorities, you find the work that matters, and you deliver it. You own your features properly: from the first technical question through to production, verified and working.
You have clear technical opinions and you know how to make them heard. You contribute to design conversations with growing confidence, and you’re developing the instinct for when to push back and when to align and move. The squad’s technical quality is higher because you’re in it, even if you’re not yet driving its direction.
You pair willingly. When a less experienced engineer is stuck or learning, you share your thinking naturally rather than just providing an answer. That instinct, to build the person’s understanding rather than just solve the immediate problem, is what separates a good senior engineer from a great one.
You are a genuine AI practitioner. You default to agentic tooling, you’re developing your own repeatable workflows, and you’re curious about what more is possible. You share what works with the engineers around you and you measure yourself in value shipped, not lines written.
We’re looking for someone who
- Is a strong, experienced software engineer who works independently on complex features and delivers to a high standard without close direction
- Contributes to architecture and design discussions with growing confidence and well-reasoned technical views
- Produces constructive, quality-focused code reviews that raise the standard of work and give reviewees something actionable
- Supports less experienced engineers through pairing and informal guidance, with a genuine interest in helping them grow
- Works agentic-first as a default: uses AI tooling effectively across the full delivery cycle and is actively developing repeatable agent workflows
- Treats quality as shared ownership with QA: writes testable code, contributes to test automation, and ensures acceptance criteria are defined and understood before development begins
- Prioritises flow and pulls work to done: steps into testing, deployment, and verification when that is what the team needs
- Is developing their cross-team voice through chapter participation and knowledge sharing
- Communicates technical decisions clearly to both engineering and non-technical audiences
Desirable
- Experience in a direct-to-consumer digital business (app, website, or e-commerce)
- Hands-on experience with agentic AI coding frameworks and workflows
